Early 2017 CFB Scheduling Roundup

Some of this stuff is new.  Some of it isn't:

* Personal one from me: I appeared on the Everything But the Scoreboard podcast this week, touching on a few college sports related items.   Have a listen & check out their other episodes.

* From Bay Area News Group writer Jon Wilner, reporting on the 2017 Pac-12 football game in Australia, except it doesn't quite belong to the Pac-12.
By noting that it is a C-USA home game, ESPN will have first crack at it as they get the opportunity to select a handful of C-USA games first, around five games.  After that, CBS Sports Network would have a chance at it.  In a separate tweet, Jon notes that the game would be played the weekend before Labor Day weekend, which is allowed when schools play a game outside the 48 contiguous states, which includes schools playing at Hawai'i.

* Jon also happened to note that the Pac-12 schedule for 2017 should appear in mid-January.  The conference used to wait until after the Rose Bowl to release the upcoming season's schedule and with Washington in the playoff, they may want to wait until after the Huskies' season is finished.

Since we're through five years of scheduling under the current TV setup with ESPN, FOX Sports and Pac-12 Networks, something to look at is the number of times each school has hosted a game on ESPN or FOX Sports on a weeknight, including Black Friday and not including the conference championship game when its been held on Fridays and when it was played at school sites:

Arizona: 4
Arizona St.: 4
California: 4@
Colorado: 6#
Oregon: 3
Oregon St.: 3
Stanford: 4
Washington: 4
Washington St.: 4
UCLA: 3
USC: 4
Utah: 6

@Cal's game vs. Hawai'i in Australia was played on Saturday in Australia, which translated into Friday night in the US.  Their home game vs. Oregon in 2014 was played at Levis Stadium, so only two of their weeknight games have been played at their home stadium.

#Two of Colorado's games were vs. Colorado St. and played in Denver.

I would think that Oregon, Oregon St. and UCLA would be earmarked for a Thursday or Friday game on ESPN or FOX Sports, and maybe Cal depending on how you count their weeknight games.  Otherwise, there's a relatively even distribution with Utah and Colorado being outliers.

The reason I left out games on the Pac-12 Networks is because those games are usually set for weeknights due to scheduling conflicts on the group of networks, though it can also be attributed to the preference of the school.  Two places to look for the potential of weeknight games are 9/2 and 9/9 when both Arizona schools are at home and have a strong preference for night games in September.  Can't put them both at night on Pac-12 Networks when the national & Arizona feeds would be carrying a single game, so if ESPN or FOX doesn't pick up one of the games on both dates, a game could end up being moved to Thursday or Friday.

* 65 games will be part of the Big 12's TV package in 2017, not including the conference championship game.  ESPN will have 23, the schools each get a game (10) and FOX Sports will have 32.  Starting with 10/14/17, each week will have five conference games with the potential for a few games to move to Thursday nights to provide some flexibility for ESPN and FOX.  Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News notes the following:
* Ohio St. at Indiana, which I thought might be a candidate for one of the Big Ten Friday night games on ESPN or FOX, has been moved to Thursday 8/31.  My assumption is that one of those two TV partners requested this change as well as they have commitments outside of college football that take up programming space over Labor Day weekend, such as ESPN2 with the US Open and FOX and/or FS1 with MLB, NASCAR Truck Series, NHRA and possibly UFC.

Would this one end up on BTN?  Not likely in my opinion, unless it is run concurrently on BTN with Buffalo at Minnesota, which is also set for that night & I believe will be aired on BTN.

* Something to consider on the two Big Ten Friday night games on September 1st: Both Mexico and the US are hosting World Cup qualifiers that day.  FOX Sports is Mexico's English language rightsholder in the US with many of their games on FS1, and ESPN and FOX split the US men's national team home games.

2016 CFB TV Facts & Figures By Conference

I've done similar posts to this one the last three years.  Hope you enjoy this.  Tried to double check most of the numbers listed here.  The conference name for each section ties back to the report of 2016 conference controlled games.

I did not do any breakdowns for the independent schools nor Navy, who has a unique section under the American's page.

ACC
  • Fifteen games on ABC.  Up two from 2015.
    • Eleven of the fifteen involved Florida St., Clemson and/or Louisville
    • Including the ACC Championship Game, the ACC will have had the most conference controlled games on ABC in primetime in 2016 (five).
  • The total number of games on ESPN and ESPN2, 23, was up three from 2015.
    • The ESPN2 game count of eight was flat from 2015, so the increase was solely on the ESPN side of the house.
  • Wake Forest and Florida St. did not appear on the ACC Network's over-the-air package.
    • I know, I'm stunned to that Wake wasn't on the over-the-air package, but they appeared five times on the RSN package, the most of any school on that particular package.
  • Overall, Virginia appeared seven times combined between the RSN and over-the-air network package, the most of any ACC school.
  • 26 games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU.  Comparison to 2015 in parenthesis and includes the conference championship game.
    • ABC: 4 (-1)
    • ESPN: 6 (-1)
    • ESPN2: 6 (-2)
    • ESPNU: 10 (+2)
    • Two games scheduled inside of this group of four networks (Navy at East Carolina on ESPN & Tulane at UCF on ESPNU) were moved to later dates in the season and ended up on ESPN3 and ESPNEWS, which may have been why the count of games across these four networks was two short of what has been reported to be the minimum number of games on those four networks.
  • Ten of the 26 games on the four primary outlets were chosen as part of the in-season selection process.
    • Houston and USF were each involved in three of those in-season selections.
  • The number of ESPN3 exclusives were constant compared to 2015 at 10.
  • American Sports Network was a new outlet for televised games, carrying six games.
  • Cincinnati appeared on CBS Sports Network five times.
    • Two of those five were scheduled before the season started.
  • The number of games on broadcast television, either regionally, nationally or reverse mirror, was flat compared to 2015.  ABC carried eight games and FOX carried seven.
    • Oklahoma appeared four times on FOX and overall six times out of the fifteen games, the most of any Big 12 school.
    • Oklahoma St., Baylor and Texas all had four appearances each.
    • Five games aired in primetime between ABC (1) and FOX (4).
  • ESPN pay TV game count.
    • ESPN: 5
    • ESPN2: 5
    • ESPNU: 4
    • Longhorn Network: 1
      • Iowa St. at Texas is this game.  The UTEP game counts as Texas' institutionally controlled game.
  • FOX Sports pay TV game count
    • FS1: 21
    • FSN: 6
      • FSN aired an additional four games that were institutionally held, plus Oklahoma had their reserved game on pay-per-view distributed and produced through FOX Sports.
  • Eight of the ten institutionally held games (one per school) involved a FCS opponent.  Only UTEP at Texas and UL-Monroe at Oklahoma were between two FBS schools.
  • This was the first season where FOX and ESPN operated as equal partners with respect to game selections.  ESPN's maximum game count also increased from 19 in prior years up to 23.
  • Of the seven games I considered secondary national / broadly syndicated, specifically games on FSN & Longhorn Network that weren't claimed as institutionally controlled games, Iowa St. appeared in three of the seven.  Kansas St. and Kansas each appeared twice.
    • As a side note, with the Big Ten moving 25 games over to FOX platforms next year, specifically FOX and FS1, it will be interesting to see if more Big 12 games move to FSN.
  • The split
    • ABC and ESPN Networks: 56
      • ABC: 19
        • Fifteen full national telecasts on ABC. Four were reverse mirror with ESPN2
      • ESPN: 11
      • ESPN2: 8
      • ESPNU: 8
      • ESPNEWS: 10
    • BTN: 42
      • Aired over 34 unique telecast windows
  • Excluding the conference championship game and two weeknight games, sixteen Saturday games were played at night.  This is up two from 2015 using the same criteria.
    • BTN: 10
    • ABC: 4
    • ESPN: 1
    • ESPN2: 1
  • Purdue continues its trend of not playing a home game on BTN with a start time later than 12pm ET since 2012 vs. Michigan.
  • Of the nineteen ABC games, eighteen of the nineteen games involved at least one of the following schools: Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio St., Penn St. and Wisconsin.  BYU at Michigan St. on 10/8 was the outlier.
  • The Big Ten and SEC were the only conferences to have at least one conference controlled game on broadcast networks every week of the season.
  • The Big Ten has had the most conference controlled games each season since 2013, including conference championship games.
    • 2012: Big 12 beat them by one, 21-20.
  • Western Kentucky was involved in four of the eleven regular season games that aired on ESPN Networks or CBS Sports Network and could make a fifth appearance if they win their division.
    • Marshall had three appearances.  C-USA West Division winner Louisiana Tech and FIU had two appearances each.
  • Unlike previous seasons, very few C-USA start times were set during the season.
  • Four of the eleven regular season games on ESPN's TV channels and CBS Sports Network were Saturday telecasts.
    • Proportionally, this is about the same as 2015 when FS1 and CBS Sports Network aired five Saturday games out of fourteen.
  • The number of webcast exclusives increased six times, from six games solely through the C-USA Digital Network to 36 games through the rebranded CUSA.TV and new partners Campus Insiders and ESPN3.
    • The increase can be directly attributed to a drop in regional and secondary telecasts with beIN Sports and American Sports Network combining to televise 25 games, where FOX College Sports, FSN and American Sports Networks more than doubled that in 2015 (54 games).
  • Western Michigan had seven of their games selected for airing on either ESPN television channels or CBS Sports Network, the most of any MAC school.
    • Toledo and Ohio each appeared five times.
  • Thirteen games aired on ESPNU and ESPN2 with another ten on CBS Sports Network.
    • The number of games on CBSSN was expected to increase over 2015 as part of a sublicensing agreement with ESPN.
  • The airing of Buffalo at Western Michigan on ESPNU was the first in-season Saturday selection for a ESPNU telecast for the conference since Fresno St. at Toledo on 9/20/08.
    • First in-season Saturday selection for any ESPN TV channel since Navy at Toledo on 10/19/13.
  • Eight games appeared on American Sports Network
    • A ninth game, Buffalo at Western Michigan, was returned to ESPN for a national telecast.
  • ESPN regular season game count, which excludes conference championship game.  Number in parenthesis is comparison to 2015 which also excludes conference championship game.
    • ESPN: 1 (0)
    • ESPN2: 12 (+1)
      • Seven in-season selections
    • ESPNU: 5 (-1)
    • ESPNEWS: 1 (+1)
    • ESPN3: 3 (-4)
  • All ESPNU, ESPNEWS and ESPN3 games were in season selections.
  • Excluding Boise St., who has specific requirements as to the number of games on ESPN TV channels, three other Mountain West schools appeared on ESPN or ESPN2 three times (Wyoming, Utah St. and New Mexico).
  • Breakdown by start time for home team for all Saturday ESPN television and CBSSN games

    • ESPN: 15 (+1)
    • ESPN2: 4 (-1)
    • FS1: 12 (0)

      • Middle Tennessee had two non-conference games vs. SEC schools that both aired on SEC Network
  • Missouri led all schools with nine SEC Network games, followed by Kentucky with eight and Georgia, Vanderbilt & South Carolina each with seven.
  • Missouri had two games on CBS and the previously mentioned nine SEC Network games.  They had no appearances on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU during the season.

Guesses for CFB TV Six Day Picks for 11/25/16 & 11/26/16 Games, Plus 12/3/16

Week 13

Friday 11/25

In the end, I think Nebraska at Iowa stays in the ESPN family and on ABC as the Huskers have a shot of the Big Ten West if they win and Wisconsin loses to Minnesota.  North Carolina is also in need of help from Virginia on Saturday to win the ACC Coastal, so their game has a bit more relevance than Houston at Memphis since Navy has clinched the American's West Division.  Western Michigan won vs. Buffalo and if they win again vs. Toledo, ESPN2 has the MAC championship game to show them again.

12pm ABC: NC State at North Carolina
12pm ESPN: Houston at Memphis
3:30pm ABC: Nebraska at Iowa
4pm ESPNEWS: Louisiana Tech at Southern Miss
5pm ESPNU: Toledo at Western Michigan

Saturday 11/26

With it confirmed that Notre Dame at USC resides somewhere on a ESPN platform, I do wonder if it will get placed away from the Iron Bowl or if they would concede that time slot and place a lesser profile game there (no disrespect intended, Wisconsin).  I assumed ND at USC and South Carolina at Clemson would be the other two ABC games earlier, but I'm less certain now.

12pm ESPN: Virginia at Virginia Tech
12pm ESPN2: East Carolina at Temple
12pm CBSSN: UCF at USF
3:30pm ABC: Minnesota at Wisconsin
3:30pm ESPN: Florida at Florida St.
3:30pm ESPN2: Navy at SMU
3:30pm ESPNU: Duke at Miami (FL)
3:30pm BTN: Penn St. at Michigan St.
7pm ESPN: South Carolina at Clemson
7pm ESPN2: UCLA at California
7pm ESPNU: Kentucky at Louisville
8pm ABC: Notre Dame at USC
8pm ESPNEWS: Western Kentucky at Marshall
10:15pm ESPN2: Wyoming at New Mexico
10:15pm ESPNU: Utah St. at BYU

Week 14 (Saturday 12/3)

Since ESPN has set their start times and TV networks for their four championship games on Saturday and ABC is being used for both the American and ACC championships, ESPN2 is open to be used either for Sun Belt, FCS playoffs or college basketball that ESPN3, SEC Network PLUS or ACC Network Extra had on their schedules.  With the Big 12 championship game re-activating in 2017, ESPN will have either the Pac-12 or Big 12 championship for the next several years, along with the Sun Belt's championship game starting in 2018.

I'm not going to waste your time with a separate guesses post.  For the three Big 12 games:

12pm FOX: Oklahoma St. at Oklahoma
12pm FS1: Baylor at West Virginia
3:30pm FS1: Kansas St. at TCU

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Notes on 11/19 six day picks & 11/25-26 selections and holds

11/19
*  If you're wondering why Texas at Kansas was scheduled for ABC & ESPN2 using a reverse mirror, or why Oklahoma St. at TCU is on FS1, my belief is that the selection order was ESPN at the top, FOX 2nd, ESPN 3rd and 4th then FOX at the back who had Texas Tech at Iowa St. fall to them.

I believe Oklahoma at West Virginia was going to be on ABC at 8pm unless something went abnormally wrong for both schools vs. Baylor & Texas, so that was at the top.  My assumption is that Oklahoma St. at TCU was also in play for ESPN as a backup plan, hence the six day hold at the very top and not further down the order.  In addition, depending on 11/19 results, Kansas St. at Baylor and Texas at Kansas could have had different relevance.

Its also important to note that the selection is generically ESPN or FOX.  They can place them where they want to, though I suspect the goal is to try to push the broadcast network games towards the top of the order.  Doesn't always happen though, and I don't know whether Texas at Kansas was 3rd or 4th.

* I believe the placement of Clemson at Wake Forest was reasonably static as the 7pm ESPN game since the SEC schedule doesn't have a knockout game, plus that whole deal re: Florida at LSU (formerly LSU at Florida).

* More commentary from me than anything else, but to have FOX take UCLA at USC on 11/19 also needed Colorado or Washington St. to lose too.  Since neither did and both are at the top of their respective divisions (yes, CU is tied on losses with USC and Utah), that one is worth taking, especially in mid-afternoon.

11/25 & 11/26
* The Big Ten has corrected a release from Illinois that said both Michigan St. at Penn St. & Wisconsin at Minnesota would be at 3:30pm ET.   12pm ET / 11pm CT is still possible, though the conference has four games already scheduled for that start time.

* The MAC clarified the start time of Toledo at Western Michigan on Tuesday, with the game airing at 12pm on ESPN or 5pm on ESPNU.

This does tie in to the possibility that Nebraska at Iowa could air on BTN.  How?  NC State at North Carolina & Houston at Memphis don't have another network family to go to unless Houston at Memphis has become available for ESPNEWS or if there will be some changes in the men's basketball games airing on ESPN2, which isn't open for the entire day.  Here's the scenario:

12pm or 3:30pm BTN: Nebraska at Iowa
12pm ABC: NC State at North Carolina
12pm ESPN: Toledo at Western Michigan
3:30pm ABC: Houston at Memphis
5pm ESPNU: Louisiana Tech at Southern Miss

* In my opinion, South Carolina at Clemson and Notre Dame at USC are the most likely games being looked at for ABC at 3:30pm & 8pm.  The order of games could be depend on if Clemson remains in a top four CFP position after 11/19.  Placement of UCLA at California could also be dependent on where

* The American might fall a game short of 28 on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.  I count 25 conference controlled games scheduled for those four networks, including the conference championship game.  There are three games on 12 day hold for 11/26 and CBS Sports Network will take one of the games, so that would leave a maximum of 27 for the four "primary" networks.

* I wasn't aware that ESPNEWS was an option for either Louisiana Tech at Southern Miss or Western Kentucky at Marshall.  In the few places I saw the telecast options presented, they were listed as ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.  Granted, Louisiana Tech has already won their division and Western Kentucky could wrap theirs up if Old Dominion were to lose to FAU this weekend as WKU beat ODU, however both Louisiana Tech and WKU could be playing to host the championship game.  La. Tech beat WKU on 10/6, 55-52.

* The only way one of the three SEC games was going to end up on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU instead of SEC Network is if they either killed off one of the SEC Network windows or decided to simulcast one of the games, similar to what they did two years ago for the Iron Bowl.

* The press release noted that BYU would have one football game a year on ESPNU, but if you're on their side, are you mad that you'll possibly have four games on ESPN2 instead three on ESPN2 and one on ESPNU?  Probably not.  Maybe a bit perturbed about a 8:15pm MT start, but at least it could be on a network that's in around 8-10 million more homes.

Either way, where that one lands is dependent on how important the Wyoming at New Mexico game is with respect to the winner of the Mountain West's Mountain Division, which should be sponsored by the Department of Redundancy Department or the American Dodgeball Association of America.

* Can't speak to why Rice at Stanford on Pac-12 is allowed to run concurrently with Utah at Colorado, unless FOX allowed it, though Notre Dame at USC and UCLA at California could also end up being played at the same time.

CFB TV Selections for 2016 Week Thirteen (11/22/16 - 11/26/16)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for 11/22, 11/25 & 11/26 from the twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to (yes, the two midweek dates are closer than twelve days, I know).  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the Week Twelve games.  Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their games held for a six day hold of the start time.  The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 all have one six day hold remaining.

The list of available TV windows are based on media websites, TV listings and press releases.  They can change based on the needs of the broadcaster or the conference.

Here's what I guessed based on the available openings (they'll prove to be incorrect) and here is the current schedule for the week as several FBS games do have their time & television/webcast assignments already accounted for.

CFB TV Guesses for 2016 Week Thirteen (11/22/16 - 11/26/16)

Here are the games already set for television and/or webcast.  Here are the known available telecast windows.

* First, how many six day holds have been used.  Hopefully, I didn't miss one:

ConferenceMax number of holdsHolds used
ACC43 (10/8, 11/5, 11/19)
American21 (11/19)
Big 122 by FOX, 2 by ESPN3 total (11/5, 11;12, 11/19)
Big Ten4 (I think)3 or 4 (9/24, 10/8 ??, 11/12, 11/19)
Pac-122 by FOX, 2 by ESPN3 total (10/1, 11/5, 11/19)
SEC22 (10/8, 11/12)

It has been explained to me that the key indicator of a six day hold is when multiple games have not had their start times set.  There have been plenty of games this season that have been reserved for a group of networks, but placed at a specific start time.

To my knowledge, the SEC is at their max, so their schedule should not be affected.  I have question marks next to 10/8 for the Big Ten since Michigan at Rutgers start time, which was already set for a night game, was not finalized until 10/2.  If that counts as a six day hold, then the Big Ten should be done. The Big Ten confirms one remaining six day hold.

For the Big 12, 11/5's hold was between two ESPN games, so that one belongs to them.  I think 11/12 was done by FOX even though Baylor at Oklahoma ended up on ABC and West Virginia at Texas on FS1.  We'll see about 11/19 once game times are announced, but most of the games will end up with ESPN and ESPN doesn't have any 11/26 games, so let's place this one on their side.  If FOX has one more to use, expect it to get used for the three 12/3 games.

As for the Pac-12, I suspect FOX used theirs on 10/1 and 11/19.  ESPN definitely used one on 11/12 as there were no FOX selections being held, so they may look to decide between Utah at Colorado and Notre Dame at USC for 11/26.

So, just about everyone has at least one available for use this week, and you might be waiting for a start time for your game of choice once again.

* NC State at North Carolina will matter with respect to the ACC Coastal.  If UNC wins and Virginia Tech were to lose to Virginia, the Tar Heels would advance to the ACC Championship Game.  Hence, its get the early ABC slot on Black Friday.
* We've already seen one case where ESPN appears to have substituted sublicensed games, with Buffalo at Western Michigan being pulled from American Sports Network back to ESPN in exchange for Temple at Tulane.  Could the same thing happen with Toledo at Western Michigan?  I suppose it is possible.  Maybe the exchanged game is another American Athletic Conference game.
* FS1 is already confirmed to have both Big 12 games on Saturday, which leaves their broadcast network game for the Pac-12.  That telecast, per multiple listing services, is scheduled to start at 8pm ET with a one hour pregame.  The one hour pregame feels geared towards Notre Dame at USC where you would load up on pre-taped features along with a lot of highlights of the week, discussing the CFP, etc. and not Utah at Colorado, but maybe FOX will prove that to be wrong.
* Michigan at Ohio St. was locked into 12pm ET about three weeks ago.
* I went with Tennessee at Vanderbilt in the evening SEC Network slot over the Egg Bowl in the event that Tennessee is still alive to win the SEC East.  Florida would need to lose to LSU and Tennessee to beat Missouri to keep that scenario alive.

Guesses for CFB TV Six Day Picks for 11/19/16 Games

Schedule

* If ESPN wanted to select Oregon at Utah or have Washington St. at Colorado fall to them, they might look to shift the 7pm window to 6:45pm to allow for the later game to start at 10pm.  They would be turning the 3:30pm & 7pm windows into windows slotted for 3 hours and 15 minutes.
* If BTN selects a game ahead of ESPN and leaves Iowa at Illinois to ESPN, it would be a more reasonable candidate for a ESPNEWS telecast.
* I think one American Athletic Conference game airs on ESPNU, hence the potential for an ACC (maybe Florida St. at Syracuse) or Big Ten game on ESPNEWS.
* I don't think a USC win over Washington tonight would affect FOX's second choice.  Assuming both Washington St. & Colorado win later in the evening, both would be at the top of their respective divisions, so it would be hard to turn that one down.
* While both Texas & Kansas lost, I don't think this one falls to ESPNU even if it is an option.

Thoughts on Week 12 CFB TV Selections & Six Day Holds

Here's the schedule.  Scroll to the bottom and click "Show Non-Televised Games" to see games that were not set for a specific time and/or TV network

* There's typically one week in November that ends up being a week where TV punts on making a lot of television decisions, or at least the decisions at the top of the food chain.  2016's Week Twelve happens to be that week with eighteen games awaiting start times & TV, plus another five who were set with a start time, but not a television outlet.  Those five (Indiana at Michigan, UTSA at Texas A&M, Ohio St. at Maryland, Arkansas at Mississippi St. & Chattanooga at Alabama) all have their TV network options in the ESPN family.

* Yes, I was surprised Florida at LSU, formerly known as LSU at Florida, wasn't selected by CBS and that it would be a daytime game.  My best guesses of what was at play:
  1. ESPN originally selected LSU at Florida and, possibly, an agreement was struck to keep the rescheduled game in the ESPN family of networks.
  2. There may have been some concessions/considerations between the schools regarding when this game would be played.  LSU at Florida was originally scheduled to be a 12pm ET start.  Placing the game on SEC Network, with the slightly odd start time or 1pm ET / 12pm CT, keeps the daytime start of the game in play.
  3. A 1pm ET / 12pm CT start doesn't work on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU without significant changes to the scheduling for other games.  For example, the possibility of a reverse mirror with ABC using ESPN2 can't happen without shifting those two TV windows if Florida at LSU airs on ESPN2.
* At the moment, I count 24 openings for 23 games, so either ESPN has dropped an opening or...man I hope I counted right...see the next couple points.

* I wasn't aware that ASN had a window available for Temple at Tulane, much less at the same time as Buffalo at Western Michigan, which is slightly curious because of WMU's current status as undefeated & the top ranked Group of Five team.  Makes you wonder if there's something going on behind the scenes with the Broncos' game and if ESPN wants the game back as it was sublicensed to ASN.  Maybe it depends on tonight's result vs. Kent St.

* I can't yet figure out what the backup plan is for the event that Oklahoma at West Virginia isn't the ABC primetime game as a national game, or falls out of favor.  Maybe Clemson at Wake Forest?  A few people have asked about the possibility of Washington St. at Colorado or maybe USC at UCLA.  I suppose that possibility exists by dropping the late ESPN window if Buffalo at Western Michigan isn't coming back to ESPN.  Dropping the late window and moving the ESPN game to line up with ABC at 8pm could create a primetime reverse mirror, but is this worth it for the third best Pac-12 game?  Also, ABC doesn't need to air another Pac-12 game in primetime.  They've aired their required two games and both happened to be 8pm ET starts.  I also want to be clear that multiple reporters pegged ESPN's window specifically at 7:30pm PT / 10:30pm ET and not as a flexible start time for them.

* I have read that there's a big push for The Big Game (Stanford at California) to be during the day if at all possible.  I'm well aware that the festivities around the game are geared towards a daytime kickoff.  I had not tracked this until it was brought to my attention, but three of Cal's four home games this year have started at 7:30pm local time, which happens to be one of the available start times for two of the telecast windows.  I imagine fans of both schools really don't want a 11am start time either, so I assume they are targeting the 12:30pm PT FOX window (less likely, in my opinion) and the 2:30pm PT Pac-12 Networks slot (more realistic).

CFB TV Selections for 2016 Week Twelve (11/15/16 - 11/19/16)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for 11/15, 11/16 & 11/19 from the twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to (yes, the two midweek dates are closer than twelve days, I know).  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the Week Eleven games.  Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their games held for a six day hold of the start time.

Six Day Holds
  • Texas at Kansas - ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU at either 12pm ET or 3:30pm ET
  • Kansas St. at Baylor, Oklahoma St. at TCU & Oklahoma at West Virginia - 12pm FS1 (one will air here), 12pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 3:30pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 7pm ESPN or 8pm ABC are the options for the two ABC/ESPN games.
  • Maryland at Nebraska, Northwestern at Minnesota & Wisconsin at Purdue - 12pm or 3:30pm on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPNEWS or BTN.
  • Iowa at Illinois - BTN at either 12pm ET or 3:30pm ET
  • Florida St. at Syracuse & Clemson at Wake Forest - 12pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPNEWS, 3:30pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 4pm ESPNEWS, 7pm ESPN or 8pm ABC/ESPNEWS
  • Navy at East Carolina, USF at SMU, Tulsa at UCF - CBSSN 7pm (one will air here), 12pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/NEWS, 3:30pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 4pm ESPNEWS, 7pm ESPN and 8pm ABC/ESPNEWS for the other three, plus possibility of ESPN3 at time of home team's choosing.
  • Oregon at Utah, USC at UCLA, Washington St. at Colorado, Stanford at California, Oregon St. at Arizona - 3:30pm on FOX, 10:30pm ESPN, then 2pm, 5:30pm & 10:30pm Pac-12 Networks in that order.

CFB TV Guesses for 2016 Week Twelve (11/15/16 - 11/19/16)

Here are the games already set for television and/or webcast.  Here are the known available telecast windows.

* ESPNEWS has a opening in ESPN MediaZone for a 7pm game on 11/17.  Have heard rumblings that a telecast has been put together for Liberty at Coastal Carolina.
* FOX Sports will select two games each from the Big 12 and the Pac-12.  The broadcast network will have a doubleheader.  Assume the 12pm FS1 is one of the two Big 12 windows.
* ESPN will use its remaining in-season selections on the Big 12 on 11/19.  It will not have any selections for 11/26 or 12/3.
* Each SEC Network telecast window is scheduled to feature two games concurrently with one set of games on the alternate channel.
* I removed the late ESPNU window after Massachusetts at BYU was scheduled to air on BYUtv.  If it does get used, throw one of the Mountain West games there as I have one on ESPN3.
* CBS lucked into Florida at LSU (previously known as LSU at Florida) being moved to this date.  The week is pretty sparse otherwise.
* Besides Florida at LSU moving to this date, via the cancellation of the two schools previously scheduled opponents, Navy at East Carolina was moved to this date due to the damage Hurricane Matthew caused in eastern North Carolina.  Doesn't really affect anything in terms of TV.  Add two games, drop two games, you net to zero.
* Chattanooga is top ten in the most recent FCS Championship Committee poll, so that kinda makes Alabama's game worth an ESPNU slot, or at least have some sort of storyline.  Similarly, The Citadel and North Carolina, as of today, are both ranked in the top 25 of their respective championship rankings.
* Yes, FOX and ABC can have concurrent Big 12 games at night.  It occasionally happens.  The Big 12's TV partners allowed for non-exclusive broadcast windows.  What I don't believe is that FOX would put Washington St. at Colorado in primetime on the broadcast network, even if both are ranked, but maybe I'm wrong.  Frankly, if the order isn't what I expect, I won't be surprised if it ends up on FS1 or ESPN.
* I'm planning for a 2nd ACC Network split window.  Last season there were two, on 11/7 and 11/21.
* To get to the American's required count of 28 games on ABC, ESPN. ESPN2 and ESPNU (which I believe includes the conference championship game), I slotted one game from the Big Ten on ESPNEWS to free up ESPNU.  It would put the number of scheduled AAC games on those four channels at 24.  Two more should be set for those channels based on available slots on Black Friday (up to 26), with two more slotted on Saturday 11/28 to get to 28.

Guesses for CFB TV Six Day Picks for 11/12/16 Games

A few thoughts because I'm posting this while the mid-afternoon games are ongoing.

  • Illinois at Wisconsin was set for a 3:30pm ET start, regardless of the TV network.  I went BTN for the game because of the trend I mentioned in this post regarding Purdue home games and BTN telecasts.
  • Florida is losing to Arkansas as of this posting and it leaves open the possibility of a three way tie based on record for the SEC East with Tennessee and Kentucky, depending on future results.  But at this point, Florida would be ahead of both, so that's where I think CBS goes with their pick instead of another game.
  • If CBS selects Auburn at Georgia, it would be the first selection of an Auburn game by CBS in 2016.
  • I struggled trying to place the games involving Maryland, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Penn St., as places them in reverse mirror situations wasn't easy.
  • Baylor is currently down 20+ points to TCU at half.  I considered the Bears' game at Oklahoma for a national ABC slot had they won, but the current result downgrades the game a bit.
  • The two Big 12 games could be slotted to air at the same start time, similar to what I have here.  FS1's slot is fixed as Texas Tech at Oklahoma St. will air at 3:30pm, while the game on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 could air at 12pm or 3:30pm ET.

12pm ABC/ESPN2: Ohio St. at Maryland
12pm ABC/ESPN2: Baylor at Oklahoma
12pm CBS: South Carolina at Florida
12pm FS1: West Virginia at Texas
12pm ESPNU: Cincinnati at UCF
12pm ESPNEWS: SMU at East Carolina

Some Thoughts on Big Ten Football Fridays

First, you need to read Teddy Greenstein's report, which has statements from a handful of schools regarding their willingness to play on Fridays.  Wisconsin has also revealed its desire to only host on the Friday before Labor Day, and not every time.  Michigan St. has hosted their Labor Day weekend opener on Friday nights four times since 2011 and Illinois's opener vs. Kent St. in 2015 was originally a Friday night games before being moved to the next day due to poor weather.

As we know, September and October are the desired months, which does make me wonder if Nebraska vs. Iowa, played on the Friday after Thanksgiving the past several years and scheduled for Black Friday again in 2017, is part of the six games in the report though it has not been a night game.  That might alleviate some of the angst over the report.

Ohio St. at Indiana was scheduled as the season opener for both schools on Saturday 9/2 and might be worth a move, as it falls in line with AD Gene Smith comment of being amenable to Friday night road games when class is not in session (actually class is in session, they'll be willing to host only when on break during fall semester).  Michigan St. is actually off that week and won't open their season until the following Saturday.  Two games on Friday 9/1/17 will air on BTN and another on (nope, no BTN) FS1 or ESPN.  Remember that ESPN has a few neutral site games that they air plus US Open tennis on ESPN2 on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, so their space is a bit limited.

Won't bother to guess the network, but I get the feeling this request could be more in line with the needs of FS1, though the games in October could be for BTN as FS1's schedule could be fluid due to the needs of the MLB postseason.  FS1 still has a lot of commitments to the Pac-12 and Big 12, though the requirements for FS1 games from the Big 12 are a lot lower than they are for the Pac-12.  FOX also wants to keep UFC after the current rights deal expires and FS1 airs a lot of UFC programming on Saturday nights through 2018.  FS1 also has MLB on Saturdays through September, which also takes up valuable programming space.

Why isn't November in scope?  Besides high school football playoffs in most states, heading back to FS1, they also have NASCAR Truck Series races three Friday nights in November, plus one Friday in September.  ESPN is also limited due to the start of NBA play plus college basketball.

Another quirk of sorts:  There's less non-conference games to choose from with the conference going to a nine game conference schedule starting in 2016 and generally, less weeks to choose them from.

I'll take a terrible stab at the six games, assuming that Nebraska vs. Iowa isn't part of this.

9/1: Ohio St. at Indiana
9/1: Buffalo at Minnesota (this one, per FBSchedules.com, is already scheduled for Thursday 8/31)
9/8: Western Kentucky at Illinois
9/8: Towson at Maryland
10/6: Penn St. at Northwestern
10/21: Purdue at Rutgers

Notes on 11/5 Six Day & 11/12 TV Selections

* I was a bit surprised to see the Washington at California game pushed to the late Pac-12 window on ESPN while the Oregon at USC game will precede it at 7pm ET.  Maybe more that the Washington at California game wasn't at 3:30pm ET.  Both games involve schools at the top of their respective divisions with USC, Utah and Colorado tied on record (Utah defeated USC, USC defeated Colorado, Utah & Colorado will play the final weekend).

I suppose the reasoning for the order is two-fold:
  • Folks may be more likely to stay up for the higher ranked Huskies compared to the Trojans.
  • Nebraska at Ohio St. and Alabama at LSU will draw plenty of viewers.  Similar to FS1 showing Kansas at Oklahoma at 7pm ET on 10/29 where a large portion of the game would be played opposite the World Series, Clemson at Florida St. and Nebraska at Wisconsin, it made more sense to have Washington at Utah outside of that fray.  Same with the placement of the two Pac-12 games, plus Kansas at West Virginia at 7pm ET.
* Use of the ACC Network split telecast window works only when you have a pair of games that don't have schools sharing any geography, such as Pittsburgh at Miami (FL) & Georgia Tech at North Carolina.  The split for distribution is rather easy:  western Pennsylvania and most of Florida for the former and at least Georgia & North Carolina for the latter.  The Georgia Tech at UNC game, in my opinion, should be the game more affiliates should have interest in.

* 11/5's Syracuse at Clemson & Oklahoma St. at Kansas St. pairing is a somewhat rare 3:30pm ET ABC window where a reverse mirror was set up not involving a Big Ten.  The most recent of these was 11/28/15 involving North Carolina at NC State & UCLA at USC.  Prior to that was 10/4/14 between Baylor at Texas & Wake Forest at Florida St.

* For the 11/12 games held for six day selections, I don't think it can be assumed that the Big 12 games being held would be split where the game airing on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 will be at 3:30pm.  Putting the Big 12 game at 3:30pm would make it a near lock that the ABC 12pm game is a national Big Ten game.

* It will be interesting to see where Northwestern at Purdue is slotted.  There's a bit of an aversion to kickoffs at 3:30pm or later at Ross-Ade and all home games in 2016 have started at 12pm ET.  The most recent game to start at 3:30pm ET was the Minnesota game on 10/10/15, televised by ESPNU.  The opening on BTN may not be for this game either.  The last BTN game hosted by Purdue that started later than noon was 2012's visit by Michigan which started at 4pm ET, which was kinda, sorta, tacked onto the Big Ten's night game release for 2012, at least by the Boilermakers, because the conference didn't note it in their release.

* In their release regarding the SEC games being held for six day selections, the conference happens to note CBS's second selection will be after their first and an ESPN selection.  What I take this to mean is that CBS and ESPN had a pair of games in mind at the top, then ESPN selected Mississippi St. at Alabama, because it is reasonable to assume that this will be the main ESPN's last Alabama game until the College Football Playoff provided they reach it, and for CBS, they appear to be holding their final Crimson Tide appearance for the Iron Bowl.  Whether Mississippi St. at Alabama was officially 2nd or 3rd, I don't know if it matters, but I believe it was half of the meat in a CBS selection sandwich.

* The selection of Stanford at Oregon by Pac-12 Networks unlocks all games for all Pac-12 TV partners for the rest of the season.  Stanford was the only Pac-12 school that had the possibility of having their final game, vs. Rice, locked into a TV partner based on the selection of the TV partner for the The Big Game vs. California.

* I believe that the TV windows for the Pac-12 Networks were adjusted slightly.  Once the decision was made to start Oregon St. at UCLA at 6pm PT, which is the earliest it could start once FOX elected to use its primetime telecast window, a decision was made to put a gap between the Pac-12 Networks windows instead of having them run back-to-back.  If they would have run back to back, a 2:30pm PT start for Stanford at Oregon would have been "legal" based on the start time, but my guess is that, unless an exception was made, FOX would have preferred to have either a game start at 2:30pm PT or 6pm PT, but not both.

* Colorado at Arizona is the first Colorado game to be selected by ESPN or FOX as part of the rolling 12 day selection process in 2016 for the Pac-12.  Their other scheduled appearances on those two platforms were previously scheduled weeknight games.

* FOX's primetime window minimum of four Pac-12 games was met by the selection of Washington at USC.  Six Pac-12 broadcast network windows have been used by FOX.  Two more are required and can be at any available time.

CFB TV Selections for 2016 Week Eleven (11/8/16 - 11/12/16)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for 11/8, 11/9 & 11/12 from the twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to (yes, the two midweek dates are closer than twelve days, I know).  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the Week Ten games.  Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their games held for a six day hold of the start time.

CFB TV Guesses for 2016 Week Eleven (11/8/16 - 11/12/16)

Here are the games already set for television and/or webcast.  Here are the known available telecast windows.

* CBS has a SEC doubleheader for the second week in a row.  The selection rules around this doubleheader are slightly different.  The 12pm game for CBS is selected fourth, after the 3:30pm CBS game and two ESPN selections.  Also, the 12pm game can have concurrent games on ESPN, ESPN2 and/or ESPNU.
* Because of the available games, I could see a six day pick being used here.  What I would expect is that CBS would stay away from Alabama at Mississippi St. because that choice would be Alabama's 5th appearance on CBS, which is the maximum when no exceptions are used by CBS.  And, unfortunately, no, I do not know what triggers a sixth CBS appearance (SEC champ game excluded), but one was used on Alabama last season.
* Since it was asked already, SEC games on CBS that were picked via sublicense from ESPN (UCLA at Texas A&M & Kentucky at Florida) are not counted as appearances on CBS.
* FOX Sports will carry three Big 12 and two Pac-12 games.  FSN's 12pm window belongs to the Big 12 and the 10pm game is a Pac-12 game. It is reasonable to assume that the 12pm FS1 game is a Big 12 game as well, so the flexible windows for the two conferences are 3:30pm ET on FS1 and 7:30pm on FOX.
* Illinois at Wisconsin is set for a 3:30pm ET start as a homecoming game.  Michigan at Iowa is either a 7pm or 8pm ET start, depending on the choice of network.
* The Pac-12 window at 5:30pm ET allows for ABC or FOX to air a night game.
* The ACC RSN window is at 2pm.  Many FOX RSNs are bookending the football game with basketball games from the Big East (USC Upstate at Georgetown, 12pm) and the ACC (Grand Canyon at Duke, 5:30pm).
* My heart said Appalachian St. at Troy had more at stake than SMU at East Carolina.  ESPNEWS it is for the matchup of two schools currently at 4-0 in the Sun Belt.

Guesses for CFB TV Six Day Picks for 11/5/16 Games

This set of guesses takes into account the two Thursday night results (Virginia Tech over Pittsburgh & USC over California).  I'll give you my main scenario (two ACC Network games) and an alternate (an ABC split national window with ESPN3 outermarket coverage).  I do not believe any of the ACC games will end up as ACC Network Extra exclusives.

Remember that some of these games are already locked into a start time, such as Wisconsin at Northwestern, Maryland at Michigan, the two SEC games listed at 12pm and the two Mountain West games at 10:15pm.  Also, the two Big 12 games were specifically slotted to air at 3:30pm and 7pm.  Noon ET was not presented as an option.

12pm ABC/ESPN2: Wisconsin at Northwestern
12pm ABC/ESPN2: Syracuse at Clemson
12pm ESPN: Texas A&M at Mississippi St.
12pm SEC: Vanderbilt at Auburn
12:30pm ACC Network: Louisville at Boston College
12:30pm ACC Network: Pittsburgh at Miami (FL)
3:30pm ABC: Washington at California
3:30pm ESPN: Maryland at Michigan
3:30pm ESPN2: Oklahoma St. at Kansas St.
3:30pm ESPNU: Georgia Tech at North Carolina
4pm Pac-12: Oregon at USC
7pm ESPN: Virginia Tech at Duke
7pm ESPN2: Kansas at West Virginia
7pm ESPNU: Florida St. at NC State
10:15pm ESPN2: Utah St. at Wyoming
10:15pm ESPNU: Nevada at New Mexico
10:30pm ESPN: Arizona at Washington St.

The alternate affects the 12:30pm ET ACC Network and 3:30pm ET telecast windows.  To the best of my knowledge, the Big 12 and ACC still allow for games to be shown regionally on ABC without television coverage on ESPN or ESPN2 for those not receiving the game on their ABC affiliate.

All others remain the same:

12:30pm ACC: Pittsburgh at Miami (FL)
3:30pm ABC: Oklahoma St. at Kansas St. & Georgia Tech at North Carolina
3:30pm ESPN: Washington at California
3:30pm ESPN2: Maryland at Michigan
3:30pm ESPNU: Louisville at Boston College

Notes on 11/1 & 11/5 CFB TV Selections and Six Day Holds

* Again, 11/1 is included because the television decision was made today.  Should be no surprise that Western Michigan's game is on ESPN2 while they are still undefeated.

* For the six days holds, yes, it does seem like too many games are being held for the number of openings.  Thosee openings are:
  • 12pm & 3:30pm (ABC)
  • 12pm, 3:30pm, 7pm & 10:30pm (ESPN)
  • 12pm, 3:30pm and 7pm (ESPN2)
  • 3:30pm & 7pm (ESPNU)
  • 12:30pm (ACC Network)
  • Sometime between 4pm & 7pm (Pac-12 Networks)
The Mountain West having both of their games on ESPN2 and ESPNU in the late evening throws off a few things, at least from my perspective, and keeps a few split window options in place, either for two games on ACC Network at 12:30pm or the possibility of a split national window on ABC at 3:30pm between the ACC and Big 12 where the game that isn't available in your area is only on ESPN3 (this appears to still be allowed).

This also allows for a Pac-12 game to be shown earlier in the evening, presumably Washington at California provided both have positive results this weekend.  It also feels like FS1 was at the back of the bus when it came to Pac-12 Saturday, though they'll have the school currently leading the Pac-12 South on Thursday 11/3 (UCLA at Colorado).

* An interesting move by FOX to move its broadcast network game to 3:30pm ET out of its previously scheduled time of 7:30pm ET.  With Alabama at LSU & Nebraska at Ohio St. at 8pm ET on CBS and ABC, respectively, coupled with available selections from the Big 12 and Pac-12, it may have been a wise move to bow out of that timeslot.

* So far, 21 American Athletic Conference games have been scheduled for ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, including the conference championship game.  I believe they'll need another five total scheduled for those networks on 11/12, 11/19 and 11/26.  Black Friday will provide them with two games on those networks, which should get them to 28.

* Stanford still needs another game on Pac-12 Networks, which is why I think FS1's Saturday selection was behind both ESPN's two picks and the Pac-12 Networks.  They should make up for it with the Rice game on 11/26.

* The Pac-12 should occupy three of FOX's five broadcast network games on 11/12, the 11/19 doubleheader, 11/25 & 11/26 to get to the minimum number of eight broadcast network telecasts.  My expectation is that the Apple Cup will be selected over TCU at Texas on Black Friday, so that should take care of one game.  Also, FOX should owe the conference one more 7:30pm ET game.  They have had three evening games so far with four primetime games expected by the conference as part of the FOX Sports package.

CFB TV Selections for 2016 Week Ten (11/1/16 - 11/5/16)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for 11/1 & 11/5 from the twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to (yes, 11/1 is eight days away, I know).  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the Week Nine games.  Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their games held for a six day hold of the start time.

Oregon at USC, Arizona at Washington St. & Washington at California - one at 10:30pm on ESPN, one at either 3:30pm or 7pm (probably same networks as Big 12, maybe including ESPNU which makes it like ACC) and a flexible Pac-12 Networks start between 4pm & 7pm ET.

CFB TV Guesses for 2016 Week Ten (11/1/16 - 11/5/16)

Here are the games already set for television and/or webcast.  Here are the known available telecast windows.

* CBS has a doubleheader with a primetime game.  This means that they'll have the first two choices among SEC games.  Verne Lundquist acknowledged the (relatively) obvious on Dallas radio this week that Alabama at LSU will be the 8pm game.  ESPN can only show games on SEC Network while CBS has their telecast windows, so expect any SEC games on ESPN, ESPN2 and/or ESPNU at 12pm ET.
* The SEC Network is scheduled to have two games at 4pm ET.
* Nebraska at Ohio St. is locked as an 8pm ET start.
* FOX Sports is scheduled to air two Big 12 games and one Pac-12 game between their three telecast windows on FS1 and FOX.
* The 3:30pm ASN selection is for the Southland.
* To squeeze in every Power 5 & American game on TV, I went with an ACC Network split window, trying to pick two games that would be shown in two unique "home" markets.  If that doesn't happen, and later weeks may be more suited to split windows, move Tulane at UCF to ESPN3 and move an ACC game to ESPNEWS in its place.  That game was moved to this date due to preparations for Hurricane Matthew.
* I am hesitant to place any more Big 12 games on ESPNU, which is why Texas at Texas Tech is on ESPN2.  There is a stated limit of four or five games on ESPNU and the Big 12 has hit the lower end of the limit and I do not know what circumstances allow for a fifth game.
* You might see more six day picks used starting this week.  By doing as many selections as ESPN does where the set the kickoff time, but not the network, inside the games they select, they can be more flexible later in the season.

Notes on 10/27 - 10/29 CFB TV Selections

Alright, I included 10/27 in the title because the MAC had two games on the date were part of today's announcements, but there was nothing out of the ordinary there.

The entire week

* So...Washington at Utah....

FOX Sports, ESPN and Pac-12 Networks, at some point, all get the top selection on a given week during the season (at least I think Pac-12 Networks still gets a top choice at some point).  But to clear about a few things:

1) FOX Sports or ESPN having the top choice doesn't necessarily mean they'll have a broadcast network window available or have to use it, or that the broadcast network is the top choice.   It has, for the most part, seemed to work out that way, though you can look back at the opening weekend when neither entity had a game on ABC or FOX.

2) Of the four games available, this particular game was the least likely to be played in the late evening windows that both FS1 & ESPN2 had available, which would have been after 8:30pm local time.  The other three are all currently on the same offset vs. Coordinated Universal Time and are an hour behind Salt Lake City for another couple weeks.  So it had to air earlier in the day than what was available, which made one of the 3:30pm & 7pm FS1, or an afternoon Pac-12 Networks window, more likely unless ESPN did some major shifting.  Trust me, I tried "running the numbers" and initially had the game on ABC until realizing that they late evening window was for the Pac-12 and it was ESPN's only Pac-12 selection.

3) FOX has to manage some risk for the particular week they carry a Saturday World Series game.  We just saw a near five hour game in the SEC (Tennessee at Texas A&M).  FOX themselves had a situation where they moved a game to FOX News a few years back due to weather delays so they could join the World Series on time as the football game was a 3:30pm ET start.  Could they have put the Pac-12 on the broadcast network at a 12pm MT / 11am PT / 2pm ET start?  Maybe, but maybe they weren't willing to take on the risks if the game, for whatever reason, runs into the World Series. They appear to have had the top choice, so FS1 it is while the broadcast network carries West Virginia at Oklahoma St. at 12pm ET.

* I can't quite figure out why Northwestern at Ohio St. was moved off of 5:30pm, but maybe it involves some of the other selections ESPN made with respect to the Big 12 and SEC.  Maybe a desire to not start a game after 8pm Central in Fort Worth, Austin or Oxford.  The last game that I could find from the Big 12 that started at or after 8pm Central in the Big 12 was Oklahoma at Kansas in 2011.  The SEC has already had three 8pm CT starts this year, which, based on going back to 2011, could be the maximum number of starts at that time per year as each year had no more than three of those games.

* Might be relatively obvious, but at 3:30pm, don't expect a reverse mirror between the two Big 12 games.  Same with the two Big Ten games at 12pm ET.  Has it happened before where two games from the same conference were reverse mirrored against each other? Yes, back on 9/22/07 with very small distribution of one of the games on ABC.  Look at 3:30pm ET.

* Initial schedules sent to RSNs had an ACC doubleheader on October 15th and that appears to have been replaced with the doubleheader scheduled for 10/29.

* Having the ACC RSN doubleheader here may have been why ESPN was able to carry five out of six available Big Ten games.  BTN initially TV listings to services that included telecast windows at 12pm & 3:30pm.  In the end, the 3:30pm window was dropped.

* American Sports Network listed a open game at 12pm which appears to be not used, though the window itself already has two games.

* Of the four in-season MAC selections that CBS Sports Network has taken, all have involved either Western Michigan or Central Michigan.  Overall, eight out of eleven games on CBSSN will involve one of the three directional Michigan schools with a twelth game to be selected from Black Friday options.  Can't blame them.  The three schools are a combined 17-4.

CFB TV Selections for 2016 Week Nine (10/27/16 - 10/29/16)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for 10/27 & 10/29 from the twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to.  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the Week Eight games.  Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their games held for a six day hold of the start time.

NOTE: While the Northwestern at Ohio St. game was moved off of its 5:30pm ET start time, I am leaving the TV window up until more selections take shape for the week, along with the 9pm window.  ESPN3 and ESPN MediaZone still list both.
