CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Six (10/8/15 - 10/10/15)

* I know ESPN is being extremely flexible with respect to TV networks at a particular time (ie. game can air on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU at 12pm).  For now, I'm not going to list things that way.
* Only one ESPNEWS window (12pm)
* Five of seven Big Ten games are locked into a specific start time as homecoming games.  Only Wisconsin at Nebraska & Minnesota at Purdue have the ability to start at either 12pm or 3:30pm
* One place for a potential six day hold is the Big 12, where TCU-Kansas St. and Oklahoma St.-West Virginia could be held back pending 10/3 results.  Oklahoma St. and Kansas St. face each other.
* Nothing stands out for the MAC's ASN syndicated game.

Here is what is already set for television.  All times Eastern.

CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Five (10/1/15 - 10/3/15)

* Initial listings from FOX Sports Midwest indicated only an ACC RSN game at 12pm, but as guide listings populated yesterday, a second game was added at 3:30pm ET.
* ESPN Mediazone indicated that two games will air on SEC Network at 7:30pm.  One on the main channel and one on the alternate.
* I don't know when the MAC's ASN game is scheduled.  Just listing it as TBA since I don't believe it is dependent on other games since it seems to be airing on a number of digital subchannels.  If they wanted to widely distribute it, and whether they can is another story, 12pm ET is a possibility.
* Purdue at Michigan St. is locked in to a 12pm start as a homecoming game.
* Learned or reinforced from last week: a) Don't bother with the time that the Texas Statcast is scheduled and correlating it to when Texas's game will air. b) Pac-12 Networks windows will rarely move to the time you think they will.
* I did not use the 10:30pm ESPN window.  When the 2nd ACC RSN window appeared, it left me with more windows than games I considered for television.  If the 3:30pm RSN window does not exist, move BC-Duke to the 12pm RSN window, kick Pitt-VT to 3:30pm ESPN and move Arizona-Stanford to 10:30pm ESPN.  Alternatively, the 12pm ABC window can be removed, move WVU-OU to 3:30pm ESPN and Arizona-Stanford to 10:30pm ESPN.

EDIT: 8pm ESPNEWS window does not exist.  Moved Colorado St. at Utah St. to ESPN3.

Here is what is already set for television.  All times Eastern.

Quick thoughts on missing Pac-12 selections for 9/26

If you didn't see it, Jon Wilner of Bay Area News Group was able to get info that the Pac-12 selections for 9/26 would not be announced tonight and if they were announced tomorrow (Tuesday 9/15/15), there may be some six day holds used.

The reasons for holding off could be one of many.  These are just off the top of my head why they would be held back a day:

1) There's a issue with the available TV windows or selection order.  Based on the open telecast windows, there are three telecast windows all scheduled to run concurrently (all times PT): 5pm ABC, 5pm Pac-12 Networks and 5:30pm FOX.

Have FOX and ABC had concurrent Pac-12 games at night? Kinda.  Once again, all times Pacific:
  • 11/24/2012, FOX had UCLA at Stanford start at 3:30pm and ABC had Notre Dame at USC start at 5pm.
  • 11/30/2013, FOX had Notre Dame at Stanford start at 4pm and ABC had UCLA at USC one hour later.
As you probably know, FOX broadcast network has to air four Pac-12 games in primetime and they have yet to air one.  They also missed the target of eight Pac-12 games on the broadcast network in 2013.  If they are being asked to give up their window, let's say Pac-12 Networks airs three games this week, FOX, for example, might need to figure out where they can add a telecast window at a later date.

2) Rosh Hashanah, which started last night and ends tomorrow.  I have seen TV announcements come out early because of what I assume was the observance of a Jewish holy day.  One example was in 2012.  Rosh Hashanah started on the evening of Sunday 9/16/12 and several announcements came out on Sunday mid-afternoon for games on 9/29 and the only connection I could draw was that it was Rosh Hashanah starting that evening.  Maybe someone involved at one of the three Pac-12 television partners or the conference office is unavailable.  Look no further than last night's Cowboys game, where Brad Sham did not call the game on radio for Dallas due to observance of the Jewish New Year.

3) An Arizona school is being asked to bite the bullet and play a late afternoon game.  They don't like playing in the heat in September.  This coming week, the two schools are both at home, but Arizona St.'s game was moved to Friday night in the spring, possibly to overcome an issue where both would have been televised by, for example, Pac-12 Networks with a preference for the same time slot.

Something else could be up that I'm not putting a lot of stock in (regionalization or reverse mirror with TCU at Texas Tech? Where does the other game go? F/X?).  The conference's silence is a bit odd.  I'm sure everything will sort itself out.

CFB TV Selections for 9/26/15 (Week Four)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times on 9/26.  Please understand that games can be held until next Sunday if a broadcaster wants to wait on the results of the 9/19 games.

The list of available TV windows are based on media websites, TV listings and press releases.  They can change based on the needs of the broadcaster or the conference.

Here's what I guessed, which will prove to be incorrect, and the schedule for week four.  I'll update the schedule page when all / nearly all decisions are made.

CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Four (9/24/15 - 9/26/15)

Schedule for Week Four

* I am expecting the 8pm Pac-12 Networks window to move to later in the evening.  It is also possible that ABC could waive exclusivity in their evening timeslot, but I believe that to be less likely.  The reason I bring it up is because of both Arizona schools playing at home while its still blazing hot in the desert.
* You could potentially see flexibility between the 8pm ABC and 10:30pm ESPN slots depending on the results of Stanford at USC and BYU at UCLA.
* Michigan has stated there would be no night games at the Big House in 2015.  Big Ten night game decisions are made far in advance.  Farther than twelve days out, even if a stadium has permanent lights.
* Do not be surprised to see a lot of flexible network decisions between several games at the same start time.  For example, the three or four ESPN Networks games at 12pm could be chosen by ESPN, but not set for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc.
* Southern Miss at Nebraska, Kansas at Rutgers and Ohio at Minnesota are locked into their start times as they are homecoming games.
* ESPN Mediazone had their Texas Statcast & Texas Halftime programming on Longhorn Network scheduled to start at 8:30pm, which would be FOX's telecast window.  The statcast is a source of game time stats while the Longhorns are playing.  Could this change?  Certainly, but it seems to have been planned for.
* ESPN Mediazone did not have telecast windows listed for the SEC alternate channel either.  Just the three on the main feed.
* While the first two SEC games were sublicensed from ESPN and do not count towards the number of appearances a school can have on CBS, I think its worth going with Tennessee at Florida instead of burning a second appearance for Auburn in September, especially if you are trying to make sure you can air the Iron Bowl in November.

Notes on Pac-12 MBK TV schedule release

Pac-12 MBK TV Schedule Release

ESPN Networks
  • Breakdown by network:
    • ESPN: 2
    • ESPN2: 17
    • ESPN or ESPN2: 7
    • ESPNU: 18
  • ESPN has two unique telecast windows set aside for the conference.  They will have UCLA at Arizona on February 12th, the Friday before the NBA All-Star Game.  ESPN2 will carry Utah at Oregon on February 7th, aka Super Bowl Sunday
  • ESPN and ESPN2's primary telecast days will be Thursdays (8 games) and Saturdays (7 games).  ESPN2 will also have six Wednesday games.
  • ESPNU's primary telecast days will be Wednesdays and Sundays (8 games each day).  The Sunday games will typically be paired as doubleheaders with the ACC.
  • Texas A&M at Arizona St. will air following the Mountain West football championship game, which is currently slotted in a three hour telecast window (refraining from rant on three hour telecast windows for football games).
  • Seven of ESPN's 46 games (44 plus two for CBS) are non-conference games, which will all air on ESPN2 except for Kentucky at UCLA on ESPN.  All of the ESPNU games are intraconference games.
  • Fourteen of ESPN's games will have a start time of 11pm ET or later.  Four others have a start time of 10pm or 10:30pm ET.
FOX Sports
  • Excluding the three conference tournament games, 20 games will air on FS1 and two will air on FOX broadcast network.
    • For now, only one of the two broadcast network games has been paired with a Big East game as a doubleheader.  On 2/27, Villanova at Marquette (2pm ET) will precede UCLA at Stanford (4:30pm ET)
  • The conference tournament final will air after the Big East championship at 10pm ET on FS1.  This mirrors what ESPN has done with the championship game, airing it after the Big 12 and ACC finals the last two times they have carried it.
  • FS1 will carry two non-conference games this season.  In two previous years, they took just one non-conference game each season.
  • Nearly half of the regular season games on FS1 (nine) will air on Thursday nights.  Five others will air on Sundays.
  • Nine of the FS1 games will have a start time of 11pm ET.  Two others will start at 10pm ET.
Pac-12 Networks
  • 147 games will be aired over 132 unique start times.  11 start times, all in non-conference play, will have instances where multiple games will start at the same time.
  • Included in the 132 unique start times are nine games on the opening night which will have a new game start every 30 minutes, starting at 7:30pm ET / 4:30pm PT, which is a pretty novel idea.  Don't be surprised to see the main Pac-12 Network feed carry whiparound coverage of every game & you'll need to use the regional feeds to see these games in full.  Last season on the opening night, the network had whiparound coverage of five games that started at 7pm PT / 10pm ET on the national feed with the regional feeds carrying the games in full.

Roundup from CFB Week 1 and C-USA & Pac-12 MBK items

Brief Roundup of CFB items from Week 1
* Appears that DirecTV is the only provider currently offering ESPN College Extra in HD.  Others, from your responses and my own experience, are receiving the service in standard definition.
* FOX Sports GO may only be offering the ACC RSN games in areas where the RSN is considered "in-market" for the ACC.  You may need to use WatchESPN in other cases.
* For those of you who like to use devices to mirror a video to your screen using a Chromecast, LiveStream.com, which is the video provider for Campus Insiders, appears to have upgraded the capabilities of its video to be Chromecast friendly.  In other words, you don't need to just cast your screen.  LiveStream videos now have the Chromecast icon on videos and are castable through the app.  Games shown via these means include:
  • Mountain West Network
    • ROOT Sports
    • Campus Insiders Exclusives
    • Potentially the Hawai'i PPV games produced by Oceanic Cable
  • Patriot League Network
  • The WCC's TheW.tv
You can go to the Campus Insiders website to mirror these games to your screen using the LiveStream video.  At this time, or at least as of last week, this was not possible with the Campus Insiders Android app.  Apologies to iPhone/iPad & Windows Phone users as I don't have access to the other devices to pass along their capabilities.

* BTN's BTN2Go app was also upgraded for use with Roku and Chromecast
* Thunderstorms mess with schedules big time.  On a smaller scale, so does believing that a college football game will end in three hours.

Men's Basketball
The Big East released its schedule on Tuesday and it gives a bit of insight into where FOX can fit some other games into their schedules.  We don't really know what they'll pick for intraconference play from C-USA or the Pac-12, but here's some notes on non-conference play:

C-USA
Not all C-USA schools have reported their full season schedules, and I'm not up for digging through everyone else's schedule to find a few Louisiana Tech or FIU games.  Here's some notable non-conference games:

11/19 Oregon St. at Rice - CBSSN or FSN.  FS1 is booked.
12/2 VCU at Middle Tennessee - FS1 or FSN.  CBSSN is booked.
12/4 Alabama at Southern Miss - CBSSN at 9pm ET, FS1 or FSN.
12/12 Auburn vs. Middle Tennessee - CBSSN or FSN.  If classified as SEC game, the SEC TV partners.  FS1 is booked.
12/22 Georgetown at Charlotte - CBSSN at 7pm ET or FSN.  FS1 is booked and CBSSN has an opening at 7pm with Miami (FL) at La Salle & St. John's vs. South Carolina as bookends.

From there, both CBSSN and FOX will take some intraconference games and then the American Sports Network package will kick in.

Pac-12
Most FOX & FS1 games should be part of conference play.  Potential non-conference picks would be on 12/2 and 12/5.

On 12/2, FS1 has no games scheduled at this time and two non-conference games that would be appealing to them are BYU at Utah and Gonzaga at Washington St.  It is possible ESPNU or ESPN2 carries one of these games at 11:15pm ET and FS1 ends up with the other, maybe paired with the VCU at Middle Tennessee game.  12/2 is scheduled quite heavily for ESPN as it is the final day of play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

For 12/5, Texas A&M is at Arizona St.  FS1 has Big East games at 12pm, 2pm & 8:30pm ET with a Big 12 football game expected to air around 4pm or 4:30pm ET.  The Pac-12 MBK game could air at 10:30pm ET.

Potential honorable mentions for non-conference games as part of FOX's 22 games include Missouri at Arizona (12/13, after Big East tripleheader?), DePaul at Stanford (12/15, more for the Big East tie-in after Monmouth-Georgetown) and Texas at Stanford (12/19, after Big East doubleheader at 4pm ET or after Orange Bowl Classic at 10pm ET. 6pm ET may have UFC on FOX prelim fights).

Note that ESPN has already used four of its 44 selections: San Diego St. at Utah and Baylor at Oregon (11/16), SMU at Stanford (11/19) and Kentucky at UCLA (12/3).

Notes on Big East MBK Schedule Release

Big East Conference Schedule (see each school for non-conference TV info)

* FOX and the conference, smartly, have elected to hold their all day marathon of intraconference games to January 2nd and away from New Years Eve, which will be the date of the College Football Playoff's semifinal games.  Conference play will start on December 30th and there will be two games on New Years Eve on FS1, but both should be over in time for the start of the first semifinal.  CBSSN will have a game that should run into the first quarter of the first semifinal on 12/31.  CBSSN, on the other hand, is not Nielsen rated.  Granted, Big East basketball doesn't move the needle very much, but FS1 is a rated network and may have an alternate programming strategy for that evening.

* Speaking of the January 2nd marathon, it won't be a continuous marathon.  For whatever reason, the Villanova at Creighton game will start at 10pm.  Maybe FOX has another event to show that evening or are planning to air another college basketball game in between, potentially from the Pac-12 or C-USA.

EDIT: FS1 could have a UFC PPV prelim card to air on 1/2/16, which could account for the break.  This was originally the date of the Rhonda Rousey-Holly Holm fight which was moved to November.

* Unlike the 2014-15 season, the schedule is currently set up to only show non-conference games on FS2.  Last year a handful of conference games appeared on the network due to other programming, often motorsports related.

* Here's the breakdown by network, excluding the conference tournament which will air completely on FS1.  I'm also not counting the doubleheader being played in Hawai'i.
  • FOX: 12
  • FS1: 98
  • FS2: 15
  • FSN: 20
    • All games in unique telecast windows, where previously games on 11/13 would run concurrently if needed.
  • FOX College Sports: 1
  • CBS: 2
  • CBSSN: 17
    • CBS has the ability to sublicense up to 20 games which can be spread over CBS and CBSSN.  I do not know if the St. John's vs. South Carolina game being played at Mohegun Sun is being sublicensed from FOX or not.
* For games scheduled on Saturdays in November, most are on FS2 or FSN to avoid college football.  The games on FSN will air after college football games, though they may not been seen in all areas due to conflicts with the NHL and NBA.  FS1 will show the Georgia at Seton Hall game on 11/28, which happens to coincide with a scheduled break between planned college football windows, after the 4pm ET game and before a 10pm ET game.

FOX did originally list a Big 12 game as airing on FS1 at 3pm ET on 12/5, but they've schedule a Big East doubleheader for that date with 12pm & 2pm games, so the earliest the football game could be slotted for is 4pm ET.

* DePaul will play on FSN five times, which is interesting as Chicagoland does not have an FSN affiliate.  At times, FOX has worked to clear FSN content on local stations that they own.  In the Chicagoland area they own both the FOX broadcast network affiliate WFLD and MyNetwork TV affiliate WPWR, where they showed a few Big East games back in 2013-14.  Providence will also appear on FSN four times but FOX has worked to clear those games with Cox Cable system in the state of Rhode Island.

Conversely, Villanova will not appear on FSN.  Philadelphia is also a city where FSN does not have an affiliate but FOX does own the local affiliate.

* Only on game on FOX broadcast network will air on a Sunday: Villanova at St. John's on January 31.  Happens to be the off week before the Super Bowl / Pro Bowl Sunday.   It is also the date of the 24 Hours of Daytona, which would conveniently be ending around 2:30pm ET.

* There are seven instances, five within conference play, where FS1 will have Big East doubleheaders starting at 6:30pm ET instead of 7pm, ie. 6:30pm & 8:30pm instead of 7pm & 9pm.  Don't know if FS1 is trying to get a head start on games or something else is up.  BTN, majority owned by FOX, often scheduled Wednesday doubleheaders for those same times.

Men's Basketball TV Scheduling Roundup

Some overall notes
  • Not pictured below, but the WatchESPN website notes that the SMU at Stanford game on 11/19 is an 11pm start on ESPN2.
  • The Georgetown at Maryland game on 11/17 will be preceded by a MAC football game on ESPN2, starting at 6pm.  As ESPN just proved on the opening Thursday night of the college football season, a three hour TV window means you won't see the start of the next event on the network that intends to air it.
  • ESPN added two ESPNU games to the Tip Off Marathon
    • Tennessee at Georgia Tech on 11/16
    • DePaul at Penn St. on 11/17
  • ESPN2 will air the Memphis vs. Ohio St. game from Miami on 11/27 at 7:30pm and the Hall of Fame Tip Off championship game at 5:30pm on 11/22.
  • The American Sports Network's sublicense agreement with ESPN for MAC content will include ten men's basketball games,
  • Speaking of the MAC, when Bowling Green released their conference schedule, they noted that all twelve games televised on ESPN Networks and CBS Sports Network would be wildcard selections.
ACC
  • Breakdown of regular season conference games by network for ESPN and CBS
    • CBS: 5
    • ESPN: 12
      • Includes Duke at North Carolina shared with Raycom
    • ESPN2: 23
    • ESPN or ESPN2: 21
    • ESPNU: 45
  • The conference tournament will be shared once against between ESPN and Raycom
  • In conference play, there are 66 games that will be split up in some fashion by Raycom's ACC Network over-the-air package and the regional sports network package that airs on mostly FOX RSNs.  Two games from non-conference play were set aside for the RSN package, one each involving North Carolina and Duke.  The remaining 77 non-conference games will be split by the RSN package and ESPN Networks, with a lot of them airing on ESPN3.
  • North Carolina at Syracuse, depending on other games that day, will either precede or follow ESPN's NFL wildcard game (yes, ABC is airing it too).
American
  • Breakdown of regular season games by national television/webcast outlet.  Includes both conference and non-conference games.
    • CBS: 3
    • CBS Sports Network: 29
    • ESPN: 1
    • ESPN2: 11
    • ESPN or ESPN2: 10
    • ESPNU: 29
    • ESPNEWS: 28
    • ESPN3: 57
      • Seven of the ESPN3 games are intraconference games.
  • One CBS Sports Network game remains unaccounted for as they can carry up to 30 games
  • Tulane has yet to release television and webcast details for their non-conference schedule.  Their game vs. Georgia Tech could be in one of the television packages.
  • Several of the CBS Sports Network games were not set with start times.  Those are likely waiting for the Big East, C-USA and Patriot League packages to be finalized.  The Atlantic 10 and Mountain West are in the same position.
Atlantic 10
  • Breakdown of regular season games by national television/webcast outlet.  Includes both conference and non-conference games.
    • American Sports Network: 30
      • 17 on Tuesdays/Wednesdays & 10 on Saturdays.
    • CBS Sports Network: 25
      • 12 on Tuesdays/Wednesdays & 9 on Saturdays
    • ESPN: 1
    • ESPN2: 8
      • Five will air on Friday nights
    • ESPNU: 5
    • NBCSN: 25
      • 15 on Saturdays and 10 on Sundays
  • The American Sports Network appears to have swallowed up the Campus Insiders & Comcast regional sports network packages.  The conference no longer has a presence at the Campus Insiders website.  I would expect some sharing of games between schools who have a presence on Comcast RSNs but not a package that is designated as the A-10 Network.
  • The conference tournament's only change with respect to broadcast outlets is that ASN will take the two opening round games that have been shown on Comcast RSNs.
Horizon League
  • Breakdown of regular season games on ESPN Networks.
    • ESPN2: 2
      • Both on Friday nights
    • ESPNU: 5
    • ESPN3: 6
  • The conference tournament's two second round games will air on ESPN3 and the semifinals will air live on ESPNU.  The conference has moved to a neutral site tournament in Detroit where the semifinals will be played on Monday night and the second round the day before.
  • Additional games will air on American Sports Network plus many more games on ESPN3 that are produced by the schools themselves.
Mountain West
  • Breakdown of regular season games by national television/webcast outlet.  Includes both conference and non-conference games.
    • CBS Sports Network: 31
    • ESPN2: 3
    • ESPN3: 22
    • ESPNU: 6
    • Campus Insiders' MW Network: 9
      • Additional games will air on the MW Network but produced by the schools
  • ROOT Sports will carry an additional 32 games regionally on television which the MW Network will carry to the rest of the nation digitally.
  • Nearly all of the ESPN2 and ESPNU games will be decided during the season.  Games have been set aside to air on either one of those two networks or ESPN3.
WCC
  • Breakdown of regular season games on ESPN Networks.
    • ESPN: 1
    • ESPN2: 6
    • ESPN or ESPN2: 2
    • ESPNU: 12
  • Seventeen of the 21 games will have at least BYU or Gonzaga as one of the two competing schools
  • Of the four non-conference WCC controlled games being televised on ESPN Networks, three will involve Gonzaga.  The fourth involves St. Mary's.  Three of those four games involve Pac-12 opponents.
  • Games on partners such as BYUtv, ROOT Sports, Time Warner Cable SportsNet, etc. will be announced at a later date.
