CFB TV Selections for 10/10/15 (Week Six)

The list of available TV windows are based on media websites, TV listings and press releases.  They can change based on the needs of the broadcaster or the conference.

Here's what I guessed, which will prove to be incorrect, and the schedule for week six.  Games that have already been set for TV are listed on the schedule page and not listed here.  I'll update the schedule page when all / nearly all decisions are made.

Six day hold on Oklahoma St. at West Virginia & TCU at Kansas St.  Options are 3:30pm ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, 7pm ESPN(2?) or 7:30pm FOX.

Six day hold on Georgia Tech at Clemson & Miami (FL) at Florida St.  Assuming the same as Big 12 games, but with 8pm ABC as one of the options instead of FOX.

CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Six (10/8/15 - 10/10/15)

* I know ESPN is being extremely flexible with respect to TV networks at a particular time (ie. game can air on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU at 12pm).  For now, I'm not going to list things that way.
* Only one ESPNEWS window (12pm)
* Five of seven Big Ten games are locked into a specific start time as homecoming games.  Only Wisconsin at Nebraska & Minnesota at Purdue have the ability to start at either 12pm or 3:30pm
* One place for a potential six day hold is the Big 12, where TCU-Kansas St. and Oklahoma St.-West Virginia could be held back pending 10/3 results.  Oklahoma St. and Kansas St. face each other.
* Nothing stands out for the MAC's ASN syndicated game.

CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Five (10/1/15 - 10/3/15)

* Initial listings from FOX Sports Midwest indicated only an ACC RSN game at 12pm, but as guide listings populated yesterday, a second game was added at 3:30pm ET.
* ESPN Mediazone indicated that two games will air on SEC Network at 7:30pm.  One on the main channel and one on the alternate.
* I don't know when the MAC's ASN game is scheduled.  Just listing it as TBA since I don't believe it is dependent on other games since it seems to be airing on a number of digital subchannels.  If they wanted to widely distribute it, and whether they can is another story, 12pm ET is a possibility.
* Purdue at Michigan St. is locked in to a 12pm start as a homecoming game.
* Learned or reinforced from last week: a) Don't bother with the time that the Texas Statcast is scheduled and correlating it to when Texas's game will air. b) Pac-12 Networks windows will rarely move to the time you think they will.
* I did not use the 10:30pm ESPN window.  When the 2nd ACC RSN window appeared, it left me with more windows than games I considered for television.  If the 3:30pm RSN window does not exist, move BC-Duke to the 12pm RSN window, kick Pitt-VT to 3:30pm ESPN and move Arizona-Stanford to 10:30pm ESPN.  Alternatively, the 12pm ABC window can be removed, move WVU-OU to 3:30pm ESPN and Arizona-Stanford to 10:30pm ESPN.

EDIT: 8pm ESPNEWS window does not exist.  Moved Colorado St. at Utah St. to ESPN3.

Quick thoughts on missing Pac-12 selections for 9/26

If you didn't see it, Jon Wilner of Bay Area News Group was able to get info that the Pac-12 selections for 9/26 would not be announced tonight and if they were announced tomorrow (Tuesday 9/15/15), there may be some six day holds used.

The reasons for holding off could be one of many.  These are just off the top of my head why they would be held back a day:

1) There's a issue with the available TV windows or selection order.  Based on the open telecast windows, there are three telecast windows all scheduled to run concurrently (all times PT): 5pm ABC, 5pm Pac-12 Networks and 5:30pm FOX.

Have FOX and ABC had concurrent Pac-12 games at night? Kinda.  Once again, all times Pacific:

• 11/24/2012, FOX had UCLA at Stanford start at 3:30pm and ABC had Notre Dame at USC start at 5pm.
• 11/30/2013, FOX had Notre Dame at Stanford start at 4pm and ABC had UCLA at USC one hour later.

As you probably know, FOX broadcast network has to air four Pac-12 games in primetime and they have yet to air one.  They also missed the target of eight Pac-12 games on the broadcast network in 2013.  If they are being asked to give up their window, let's say Pac-12 Networks airs three games this week, FOX, for example, might need to figure out where they can add a telecast window at a later date.

2) Rosh Hashanah, which started last night and ends tomorrow.  I have seen TV announcements come out early because of what I assume was the observance of a Jewish holy day.  One example was in 2012.  Rosh Hashanah started on the evening of Sunday 9/16/12 and several announcements came out on Sunday mid-afternoon for games on 9/29 and the only connection I could draw was that it was Rosh Hashanah starting that evening.  Maybe someone involved at one of the three Pac-12 television partners or the conference office is unavailable.  Look no further than last night's Cowboys game, where Brad Sham did not call the game on radio for Dallas due to observance of the Jewish New Year.

3) An Arizona school is being asked to bite the bullet and play a late afternoon game.  They don't like playing in the heat in September.  This coming week, the two schools are both at home, but Arizona St.'s game was moved to Friday night in the spring, possibly to overcome an issue where both would have been televised by, for example, Pac-12 Networks with a preference for the same time slot.

Something else could be up that I'm not putting a lot of stock in (regionalization or reverse mirror with TCU at Texas Tech? Where does the other game go? F/X?).  The conference's silence is a bit odd.  I'm sure everything will sort itself out.

CFB TV Guesses for 2015 Week Four (9/24/15 - 9/26/15)

Schedule for Week Four

* I am expecting the 8pm Pac-12 Networks window to move to later in the evening.  It is also possible that ABC could waive exclusivity in their evening timeslot, but I believe that to be less likely.  The reason I bring it up is because of both Arizona schools playing at home while its still blazing hot in the desert.
* You could potentially see flexibility between the 8pm ABC and 10:30pm ESPN slots depending on the results of Stanford at USC and BYU at UCLA.

* Michigan has stated there would be no night games at the Big House in 2015.  Big Ten night game decisions are made far in advance.  Farther than twelve days out, even if a stadium has permanent lights.
* Do not be surprised to see a lot of flexible network decisions between several games at the same start time.  For example, the three or four ESPN Networks games at 12pm could be chosen by ESPN, but not set for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc.

* Southern Miss at Nebraska, Kansas at Rutgers and Ohio at Minnesota are locked into their start times as they are homecoming games.
* ESPN Mediazone had their Texas Statcast & Texas Halftime programming on Longhorn Network scheduled to start at 8:30pm, which would be FOX's telecast window.  The statcast is a source of game time stats while the Longhorns are playing.  Could this change?  Certainly, but it seems to have been planned for.

* ESPN Mediazone did not have telecast windows listed for the SEC alternate channel either.  Just the three on the main feed.

* While the first two SEC games were sublicensed from ESPN and do not count towards the number of appearances a school can have on CBS, I think its worth going with Tennessee at Florida instead of burning a second appearance for Auburn in September, especially if you are trying to make sure you can air the Iron Bowl in November.
