CFB TV Guesses for 2024 Week 5 (9/28/24)

Here are the games already set for television and/or webcast. Here are the known available telecast windows. 

I have done my best to list what TV windows are out there. Every listing service has a little different schedule for these networks. It is also possible that a window could be eliminated or the time of a window could shift slightly to accommodate a network's needs.

Instead of cluttering up these posts even more, I'll try to keep track of the unique conference TV arrangements in a separate post.  

A few notes and considerations:

• Games already set for time or TV network family, but not both:
• Kentucky at Ole Miss (ABC or ESPN, 12pm)

* ABC has already set their primetime game with Georgia at Alabama.  In addition to that, SEC Network already has its evening window set and will not have a early game.

* FOX is scheduled to have a late evening game, presumably for the Big Ten.  

* CBSSN will have a MAC selection.

* The Peacock app appears to show two separate Big Ten exclusives.  One at 12pm and one at 7pm ET.  This is in addition to NBC's 7:30pm window.

* BTN appears to only have a 12pm window.

* FS1 has a 9:45pm window which strongly indicates where Washington State at Boise State will be placed.

* CBS affiliates were made aware that their Big Ten 3:30pm window could switch to 12pm depending on a six day hold used by another network. I assume that network is FOX the two networks would swap.

* NBC let the cat our of the bag in a now removed portion of their weekly press release that they would be carrying Nebraska at Purdue.

* I think there's a chance that a Big 12 six day hold will be used between some combination of Colorado at UCF, Oklahoma State at Kansas State & Arizona at Utah.  I have ABC/ESPN making the decision.  Whatever is chosen likely impacts where Kentucky at Ole Miss ends up

Potential MBK games being set for TV for November 2024

ESPN put out their advance listings for November at their Watch website and the month has some men's college basketball listed under the guise of the conference of the home team instead of the actual game.  So what games could they be?

Note that plenty of games involving exempt events like the Battle 4 Atlantis, Maui Invitational, etc. will be played this month, so these are the "hosted" games.

CFB TV Confirmations for 2024 Week 4 (9/21/24)

This post will be updated as announcements come out for start times for Week 4 (9/21/24) from the (mostly) twelve day selection process that most TV networks adhere to. Most conferences have the possibility of having all or part of their scheduled games held for a six day hold for the start time and/or the TV network. The list of available TV windows are based on media websites, TV listings and press releases. They can change based on the needs of the broadcaster or the conference.

Here's what I guessed based on the available openings (they will prove to be incorrect), along with the games that have already been set. 

There's also a handful of rules that both conferences and TV networks have put into their agreements which affect these selections, which are updated weekly and can be found here.

* I went with Miami (FL) at South Florida at noon on ABC to help fill requirements the American has for games on ABC, pushing Florida at Mississippi State to ESPN.

* For the Big Ten, USC at Michigan was chosen by CBS in advance of the season, which indicates that this game was the top choice of the conference this week.  After that, I placed Marshall at Ohio State on FOX and Iowa at Minnesota on NBC in that order.

* With the Big 12, I placed Utah at Oklahoma State on FOX as the conference's top choice this week, followed by Baylor at Colorado on ESPN in the late evening.  I'm assuming the latest a Big 12 game can start on TV remains 8:15pm local, which would be acceptable for Baylor at Colorado.

* Not pictured here is that Portland State at Boise State will start at 9:45pm ET on FS1. With a 7pm FS1 window, viewers should expect to see the game on FS2 to start.

Review of the 2024 CFB TV Early Season Selections

If you happened to miss any of the early season and special date start time & TV releases, feel free to head to my schedules site to look over how everything shook out.

* Over the course of the season, I'll be curious to see if ESPN's noon Eastern telecast window becomes less of a SEC window and more of a Big 12 or ACC window.  Many of the conference's members don't like the early start times and the SEC Network has went to moving back the start times of their early & mid afternoon windows to accommodate the schools' preferences.

* I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the SEC has six games hosted at their schools' stadiums in the first nine ABC slots.  Over the course of the weeks 1-3, the conference will feature in every game on ABC with the six games under their control, three neutral site games and as the road team vs. a Big 12 opponent.

How often the ACC and Big 12 appear in primetime on ABC over the course of the season will be of interest.  The conference will have three games in primetime on ABC on Saturdays in September alone (the Duke's Mayo Classic appears to count for the ACC if it counts for anyone at all).  

How often will the SEC be the default option at 7:30pm when they already have the 3:30pm window?  I'm going to put the over/under number of 7.5 games on ABC at 7:30pm over the course of 14 weeks, and that might still be too low, even with games like Oklahoma vs. Texas & Georgia vs. Florida remaining as afternoon games as they have been for years.  A new conference for the former, and a new broadcast network for the latter, didn't change those two games.

* Another "loser" with the SEC moving to ABC, for Black Friday at least, is the American.  It was known that the SEC would contribute a Black Friday game as they had in prior years with CBS.  The addition of a 2nd game was a bit of a surprise. The American, who has had a game on Black Friday on ABC since 2013 with the exception of the 2020 season, will be shut out of an ABC slot though they'll have a noon ET game on ESPN.

* I don't think it was a great surprise to see the FOX Friday night football schedule be void of big name schools like Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.  West coast additions to both the Big 12 and Big Ten will feature in seven of the ten games (excluding Black Friday) and will host four of the the ten games, where they wouldn't otherwise be able to host a Big Noon game on FOX, so this is a way to get them some exposure with far less competition.

FOX skipped November 2nd, which would feature World Series Game 6 if needed.  If it isn't needed, I could see FOX simulcasting the San Diego State at Boise State game from FS1.

* From the announced windows that I've seen from CBS, and been provided regarding NBC's Big Ten windows and FOX's overall schedule, I'm not certain that we'll see as many late night broadcast network windows for the Big Ten as we've hoped / expected.  FOX may have moved a few of those over to Friday nights instead.  FS1 and BTN may be the place for Big Ten After Dark (Big 12 After Dark too along with ESPN).

* Regarding the previous item regarding late evening Big Ten games, I've had a few folks draw the conclusion that the Army - ND game at Yankee Stadium having a start time of 7pm is so that NBC can take on the USC at UCLA game after that.  What NBC has communicated to affiliates doesn't include a late evening telecast window on any week, and I can see NBC starting their Big Ten afternoon window a little bit earlier to provide some space before the Notre Dame game.

As for late evening NBC produced games, Peacock will have at least one, Boise State at Oregon, and could have others.  More should be know about the expected dates and times of the Peacock games as they populate inside of the app.

* ESPN preselected two Big 12 games into October and November: Cincinnati at Colorado on 10/26 and BYU at Arizona State on 11/23.  I can't tell if they did that because they're going to have limited linear TV space those two weeks for the Big 12, if they were the top choice (I'm assuming not), or if they were preselected as a potential late evening or mid-morning game. 

With other conference, if the game doesn't stick out as having significance, it tended to mean that it was in the middle of the selection process, like pre-selecting the 3rd or 4th pick of the week.  Both games are specially designated for each host school (Colorado: Family Weekend, ASU: Homecoming & Junior Sun Devil Club).  Maybe they'll end up being earlier in the day, whether its on ABC or ESPN.

* The NFL Network sublicense of Group of Five games from ESPN appears to be off the screen, at least through Week 3.  Not sure if that's due to NFLN's budget cuts or ESPN preferring to keep the content around.

* The four Mountain West controlled games on CBS matches their high mark from 2022, and with FOX carrying a game on Black Friday, the 2024 season will have the most Mountain West regular season games shown on an over-the-air TV network.

* ESPNU will carry a pair of Missouri Valley Football Conference this year, and I'm pretty sure these will be the first ESPN linear TV games for the conference since 2008.

2024 Conference TV Requirements, Six Day Holds and Likely First Picks

Instead of cluttering up the weekly picks for 2024, I'm going to keep track of selection specific information in this post like six day holds that have been used, the number of times I think a network has chosen first and the required appearances that a school needs to fill on conference networks like Big Ten Network.

Updated through 11/23 selections made on 11/11, excluding six day holds.

I'm unsure if six day holds will continue to remain a going concern in the SEC with their declarations of telecast windows for a game earlier in the offseason.  I think they could remain a thing if a game could air on ABC or ESPN at a particular time, or if a game is to be scheduled between 3:30pm & 7:30pm and doesn't have a finalized start time until six days before.  I'm also unsure whether there will be any maximum number of times a school can appear on ABC.  I think that is gone as well.  We'll find out as the season goes on.

Please note that this is my guess about who chose first in a given Saturday. This is not a confirmation from either the networks or conferences of who chose first.

Big Ten

Assumed top Saturday choice each week.  Weeks 2-4, 10 and 14 were mostly known in advance of the early season selection release.

Re: Week 5.  I think FOX controlled the six day hold.  Yes, Ohio State at Michigan State was picked by Peacock and set, but I don't think think it was picked ahead of the games FOX was jockeying for.

There were ranges previously announced for the Big Ten and its TV partners, but they were announced prior to Oregon and Washington being accepted as future members.   

126(!) regular season games are available to the Big Ten's rightsholders.  It appears that NBC, CBS and Peacock will take at least 39 of those games.  FOX, FS1 and BTN would take on 87 of them, 41 of which have been accounted for.

Last year, ESPN had a limit of 32 linear TV games.  I have no clue this year how those limits have changed with the increase in membership.  101 regular season games are in the Big 12's governance,
10 of which have been selected for ABC & ESPN's linear TV channels so far across the season.

FOX Sports has the overall number 1 choice to use for the Big 12 in 2024.  I believe it was used on Penn State at West Virginia in Week 1.

As for member retained games, 14 of the 16 Big 12 games had their ESPN+ games selected through Week 4.  Colorado and Arizona State did not have their member retained game used on a non-conference game.  The Big 12, several years ago, said there were circumstances where those games could be a) returned to the national rightsholders and/or b) used on a game vs. another Big 12 school.

American

The American has a minimum of 40 games per season on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.  At least 20 of the 40 are expected to be on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.  So far, at least 14 games have been guaranteed to air on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2

It appears that one Army road game vs. an AAC opponemt (Army at Florida Atlantic) was traded to CBSSN in exchange for an Army home game (East Carolina at Army).  I've listed the FAU game in the Other column.

Additional Context For My 2024 Early Season CFB TV Guesses

Some additional context with the final set of CFB TV guesses for the early season found here, here and here:

* Each SEC school is supposed to have one game on ESPN+/SEC+.  With additional changes due to TV announcements over the first three weeks, here's when I am assuming each SEC school will have their ESPN+ game:

• 8/31: Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss
• 9/7: Florida, LSU, Missouri, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt
• 9/14: Tennessee, Texas
• 11/2: Oklahoma
• 11/16: Alabama, Kentucky
• 11/23: Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina

* While we wait for Oregon State and Washington State to finalize their CW contract, I'm expecting at least one Friday night home game for each school to alleviate some Saturday congestion.  The ACC contract between Raycom and the CW is for 13 football games also.  With the 2024 regular season having an extra week, I could see a week where an ACC game is skipped by CW to carry other events like LIV Golf plus their newly added NASCAR Xfinity Series races late September through November.  Or as you'll see below, the possibility of a ACC CW Friday night game.

* FOX supposedly has the top three selections across the season for the Big Ten.  Providing that is indeed accurate, we can safely assume that Michigan at Ohio State is top choice along with FOX announcing that they'll carry Texas at Michigan for Week 2, a game FOX worked to maintain control of in 2024 by working with the two schools to switch venues for their matchups in 2024 and 2027.

My last pick at the top is an interesting one.  FOX rarely gets a chance to show Alabama and they have their road game against Wisconsin, but Wisconsin isn't projected to be ranked coming into the season.  This is also likely to be the Crimson Tide's first "test" of the season with new head coach Kalen DeBoer.  

So...what about taking Ohio State at Oregon on 10/12 or Ohio State at Penn State on 11/2?  Ohio State at Oregon doesn't fit the "Big Noon" mold since it would be a 9am start in Eugene.  FOX could certainly take it to air later in the afternoon.  Friday night I don't believe is an option based on Ohio State's desire not to play on Fridays.  Could certainly see it as the NBC game with Stanford at Notre Dame as a lead in too.

I think FOX will stick with Alabama at Wisconsin, while Ohio State at Oregon goes to CBS on 10/12 and Ohio State at Penn State on 11/2 for NBC at night, at least right now with those two for CBS and NBC.

* FOX has the first pick of weeks where they can choose first in the Big 12 in 2024, the final year before ESPN gets primary control of football.  What game would FOX look to choose first?  Without the options of Oklahoma vs. Texas or Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State, its not as cut and dry as it used to be.

Penn State at West Virginia would be an ideal candidate as the Nittany Lions are expected to be ranked, and WVU might be at the back end of the Top 25 to start the year, even if the road team being an expected Top 10 ranked team to start the year is the reason to choose it. 

Utah at Oklahoma State (Week 4), Oklahoma State at Kansas State & Arizona at Utah (both latter two Week 5) seem like they could be a big games early in the Big 12 season based on the "Way Too Early" rankings in a few places, but none has the juice you might be looking for.  Kansas State at Kansas for Week 9 is further down the schedule too.

Arizona at Kansas State is also in that mix, but it has already been reserved as a Friday night game for someone.  I'm looking through who might have those as well.

In the end, I think it will be Penn State at West Virginia that FOX looks to take off the top of the Big 12 inventory, taking their chances with other weeks down the schedule to get quality games from the Big 12. 

* Could the Big 12 still have a chance to occupy the noon Eastern slot on FOX? Maybe.  I can see the opening week being a good spot for it if Penn State at West Virginia is available to FOX, but I do think FOX will want to showcase the defending national champion Michigan in the opening Big Noon slot.  If FOX has the top Big 12 pick in either Week 4 or Week 5, and doesn't have the top Big Ten choice that week, then I could see a Big 12 game early in the day.

That said, I know what the Big Ten has been disseminating as messaging around their expected weekly TV schedule, so the Big Ten might be locked to FOX at noon ET with the Big 12 occupying the slots in mid-afternoon and evening.

* What might the Thursday night CFB TV schedule look like?  Assume ESPN unless denoted.

Week 1: North Dakota State at Colorado (ESPN), North Carolina at Minnesota (FS1)

Week 2: No game

Week 3: Arizona State at Texas State

Week 4: South Alabama at App State

Week 5: Army at Temple

Week 6: Texas State at Troy (likely on ESPN2/U due to MLB postseason with possibility of elevate to ESPN)

Week 7: Coastal Carolina at James Madison (ESPN), C-USA (ESPN2/U)

Week 8: Boston College at Virginia Tech (ESPN), Georgia State at Marshall (ESPN2/U)

Week 11: Florida Atlantic at East Carolina (ESPN/2), App State at Coastal Carolina (ESPN/2)

Week 12: East Carolina at Tulsa

Week 13: NC State at Georgia Tech

Week 14: Memphis at Tulane

North Dakota State at Colorado happens to be CU's only home non-conference game, but exceptions have been made for Big 12 schools to have their sole non-conference game end up on national TV and not to have a member retained/3rd tier game for ESPN+.  Two examples: Tulsa at Oklahoma State on FS1 in 2017 and UNI at Iowa State in 2019.  Both may have been to help FOX Sports have a full compliment of national Big 12 games.  Now that ESPN has the member retained rights, they might have the ability to game the system.

* Here's what I'm guessing the Friday night schedule to look like this, though I don't know if its been finalized how FOX will work through its remaining WWE Smackdown requirements before its college football package airs.  I'm also not sure how this work when FOX airs any World Series games, or other MLB postseason games, and whether CFB will be skipped or move to FS1.

Every game listed with ESPN, or in the case of one week with the ACC Network or CW, has been moved to Friday.  Most of FOX's schedule hasn't been moved to Friday with the exception of any games they end up airing from the Big 12.

Week 1

ESPN: Temple at Oklahoma (confirmed) followed by TCU at Stanford

FOX/FS1: Western Michigan at Wisconsin

Week 2

ESPN: BYU at SMU

FOX/FS1: Boise State at Oregon

Week 3

ESPN: Arizona at Kansas State

FOX/FS1: Utah at Utah State

Week 4

ESPN: Stanford at Syracuse

FOX/FS1: Northwestern at Washington

Week 5

ESPN: Virginia Tech at Miami (FL)
FOX/FS1: Maryland at Indiana

Week 6

ESPN: Houston at TCU

FOX: Michigan State at Oregon

If this is Oregon's homecoming weekend, Indiana at Northwestern could be a choice.  Dark horse could be Syracuse at UNLV, as UNLV often has to move home games to Friday nights if they coincide with Sundays when the Raiders are at home and not in the primetime NBC game.

Week 8

FOX: Oklahoma State at BYU

Week 9
