What's new for D1 College Football on TV in 2023

You probably made it through the "practice tailgate" Saturday and now its time for the regular season to begin in earnest this coming Thursday.  Labor Day weekend allows everyone to ease into the season (which includes the game quality unfortunately) and give everyone a chance to find games over the course of several days.

So what is new?
  • The Big Ten starts its new rights agreements with FOX Sports maintaining its primary partner status, but new partners NBC and CBS.  CBS is slowly getting involved due to its existing SEC contract ending after the 2023 season, where NBC will have a full schedule.

Most of NBC's games will be at 7:30pm ET, but they'll have a few 3:30pm games too as Notre Dame will have a couple primetime home games.  FOX will spread their games out across FOX and FS1, but expect their Big Noon game to feature the Big Ten most weeks of the season.  CBS will feature at select times for seven games this season until 2024 when they get a weekly game.  Last but certainly not least, Comcast's Peacock streaming platform will carry nine exclusive games (ie. not on NBC, only on Peacock) over the course of the season.

The missing rightsholder from prior years is ESPN.  They no longer have the ability to air home games from the conference.

  • The ACC's games that previously aired on regional sports networks, mostly on Diamond Sports Group's Bally Sports RSNs, will now air on the CW on a national basis.  These games were sublicensed from ESPN to Raycom Sports, who then granted RSN groups, first FOX Sports, then Bally Sports, to manage the package on Raycom's behalf while they provided game production support.

As part of the various bankruptcy filings by on Diamond Sports, one included releasing DSG from the remainder of its agreement to continue airing the ACC games.  Raycom supported the filing as they had not been paid, and was granted the ability to shop these games to a new partner.

The CW package will be for less football games (13 compared to the RSNs carrying 17) and there are basketball components to it that we'll note in a couple months.

  • CUSA will have regular games on ESPN and you've likely seen one of those games already as part of the Week Zero schedule.  Most of ESPN's games will be on weeknights in October as the conference moves to a full weeknight schedule for the month.

CBS Sports Network remains the conference's primary TV partner.  Stadium, a TV partner in the previous set of TV rights agreements, has exited as a TV partner.

  • Speaking of Stadium, they are also no longer involved in the Mountain West's digital rights.  The conference is working with their digital partner WMT, who created a set of apps for the conference at the end of 2021 to stream live events and now manages the conference's website.

Notes on the 2023 CFB TV Early Season & Special Date Selections

The early season and special date TV announcements have been made for the D1 NCAA college football schedule.  There's always a few surprises.  I've put together a "facts and figures" post as well that will get updated throughout the season as appearances and contractual items are being met.

Here's a few that I took note of:

A big bet on Colorado: The Buffs, with new head coach Deion Sanders, have become must see TV for networks through the 1st three weeks, particularly by FOX who will have them to open the season as part of their marquee Big Noon slot.

Choosing them for a 10am local start for the home game vs. Nebraska raised some eyebrows too, but they've made the occasional brunch start for national TV, and this appears to fit that bill.

How to fill the Big Ten gap on ABC: The ACC has five games under their control, plus three more neutral site games that they have a participant and a non-conference road game, through the opening set of TV announcements.  The Pac-12 and Big 12 will also have a large presence on ABC this year.  I'll be curious to see if any other conference break in to the rotation.  The American is guaranteed to have at least two games (Alabama at South Florida and one game on Black Friday).

I'm curious to see if the Sun Belt will break through, particularly since either the American or Sun Belt's title game will get the 4pm ABC slot on Championship Saturday.

Peacock gets a premium non-conference game: When the news leaked that Syracuse at Purdue would be NBC's primetime game on 9/16, a reasonable assumption was that FOX had both Penn State at Illinois and Washington at Michigan State.  We were all wrong, as Peacock picked up the non-conference game involving a likely preseason Top 10 Pac-12 school. Last summer, NBC Sports executive Rick Cordella hinted that Peacock wouldn't be treated second class by NBC when it came to game selections and this choice demonstrated that vision.

Picking up East Carolina at Michigan was a bit of a surprise to me too.  I thought it would be in the FOX camp (they chose no games for their broadcast network on Saturday for Week 1 from the Big Ten).

CBS' Big Ten appearances will be spread out over the course of the season: After getting through three games over the first two weeks (something I believe was verbalized by CBS Sports chief Sean McManus but I can't find his original quote), the remaining four games will be spread out.  One previously announced on 9/23 for Iowa at Penn State when Ohio State at Notre Dame airs at night on NBC and one on Black Friday for Iowa at Nebraska. It was assumed CBS would do a night game on 10/14 when NBC would be carrying USC at Notre Dame, but their remaining two games will be noon starts on back to back weeks in late October and early November.

Which leads into....

Those Big Ten broadcast windows aren't as exclusive as you may have thought: At least through the mostly non-conference portion of the schedule.  The broadcast network windows look like they'll be mostly exclusive (I do wonder if this means that FOX isn't carrying Big Ten games at 12pm on 10/28 & 11/4 when CBS is), but FS1 carrying games while other broadcast networks have their windows isn't quite surprising and BTN carrying games throughout the day should be expected.

Frankly, games will need to be carried throughout the day, so if FS1 is earmarked for a Big Ten game, its likely to come at some point during the day.

Why Charlotte at Maryland for NBC in Week 2?: Got a lot of questions on this one, but there's a couple things to remember:

1) NBC seems to want a game every week

2) The games available from the Big Ten for this particular week, with respect to games vs. FBS opponents, aren't that great.

UNLV at Michigan
Charlotte at Maryland
UTEP at Northwestern
Temple at Rutgers
Eastern Michigan at Minnesota

No slam dunks there.  Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan State had games vs. FCS opponents.  I saw a few opine that Youngstown State at Ohio State would have been NBC's choice, and I look at that and say "no" when you consider that either this one or the WKU game the following week helps fill a BTN requirement.  If the YSU game were to air on NBC and the WKU game remains on FOX, it pushes a 2nd game vs. a Big Ten school for OSU on to BTN.

Charlotte at Maryland may be a bad looking game for NBC to select, but their options were limited.

There's still a decent amount of TBAs for the first three weeks, particularly Week 2: More than I expected, and they fall into two categories.

1) If its an ACC home game, there's still a debate happening whether the RSN package that has mostly aired on Bally Sports RSNs for the past few years still exists.  If you've followed any sports media news, a fan of the San Diego Padres, or an avid bankruptcy court consumer, you're keenly aware of the decision Diamond Sports Group has made to declare bankruptcy and either make partial payments to several MLB clubs for TV rights or in the case of the Padres, relinquish them.

Raycom Sports, who manages the regional TV contract for the ACC via a sublicense from ESPN, is one of Diamond's creditors.  It is certainly possible, now that a bankruptcy court has ruled in favor of four MLB teams who have been paid less than their contracts require, that Raycom could get in line asking for their money.

While I can't get into any specifics, I'm told that the RSN package is in a holding pattern, but that Raycom is working on plans for a package of games and that some of the TBA games will be part of that.

2) There's a couple open slots on ESPN networks during Week 2, but its unclear is those will be filled by, say, a expanded telecast of Texas at Alabama or other programming.  Friday night on ESPN2 and ESPNU are open at the moment.  Illinois at Kansas may have been moved to Friday.  Houston at Rice was initially an option to be moved to Friday too.

The early Boise State start time for 9/16: 10am local is outside of the allowed start times for the Mountain West on FOX, so I have to assume that Boise State OK'ed this.  Maybe the Mountain West did too.  Back when the rights agreement started in 2020, the Broncos had a home game scheduled with Florida State that it was expected to be a 10am local / Big Noon Saturday selection for FOX.  While not nearly the prestige, this seems to fall into the same arena of working with Boise State to get the game on FS1 instead of FS2, possibly.

FOX didn't take as many Mountain West games compared to 2022 or 2021: In prior seasons, FOX Sports was closer to its maximum allowed number of 23 regular season games but in 2022, its closer to the minimum.  I have two theories on this:

1) There's a potential desire to have less or no games on FS2.  In prior seasons, six games per year ended up on FS2.  Remove those and you have the same number of games FOX Sports selected overall for 2023.

2) Because of the increase in members for the Big 12 for 2023 (from 10 to 14), FOX Sports also may have an increased expectation to carry more Big 12 games compared to prior seasons.  I have questions out to several parties to understand how Big 12 minimum and maximum game requirements have changed for the upcoming season.

Both CBS and FOX can take up to four MW controlled Hawai'i games and they only took two, leaving nine games for Hawai'i's Spectrum PPV package to take on.  After that, 20 games remain for local & regional broadcasters along with the MW Network to produce.

Mountain West in primetime on CBS: This one doesn't surprise me as much as it did some of you.  The conference gets three games on CBS during the regular season, one of them on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, but the other two will be in primetime after Big Ten games in Weeks 1 and 2.

I think there's still some affinity to the use of the primetime television slot as it being marquee and for the weeks the MW was used here, I don't think that's the case and there's some strategy behind it, particularly with the Big Ten and the desire to have broadcast networks not step on each others' time slots:

1) For Texas Tech at Wyoming, its the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.  Its not necessarily meant to be a big TV viewing weekend and with less marquee games over the week on Saturday, its a nice soft spot to get rid of a required game

2) With UCLA at San Diego State, the 2nd week of the season, it is placed against Texas at Alabama and I think its another place to help complete a requirement.

2023 Conference TV Requirements, Six Day Holds and Likely First Picks

Instead of cluttering up the weekly picks for 2023, I'm going to keep track of selection specific information in this post like six day holds that have been used, the number of times I think a network has chosen first and the required appearances that a school needs to fill on conference networks like Big Ten Network or Pac-12 Network.

Updated on 11/13/23 as of selections for 11/25/23 (Week 13).

Six Day Holds Used
ACC (0* available): 10/14, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/25
American (4 available):
Big Ten (2 available): 10/21, 11/18
Big 12 (0 available): 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 11/25
Pac-12 (1 available): 11/11, 11/18, 11/25
SEC (2 available): 11/11

It appears that the ACC had five six day holds used against them.  Unsure if ESPN requested the fifth hold of the schools involved and all said yes, or that there's a set of requirements that I've misunderstood.

Please note that this is my guess about who chose first in a given Saturday, and this might be fairly irrelevant with the Big Ten since it seems like games are being drafted instead of slots.  This is not a confirmation from either the networks or conferences of who chose first.

Notes

I have an asterisk next to the 11/11 top choice.  I do believe that NBC truly had top choice on the day, but with the various TV items in flight detailed by Pete Thamel, I'm working under an assumption that Michigan-Penn State would have been NBC's choice, but did not want to play their game at night at all costs, hence Ohio State agreeing to host Michigan State at night.

Each network has a fixed number of selections.  The count below does not include the conference title game on FOX.

FOX/FS1 only used 26 of their 27 selections and appears to have given one back to BTN.

Notes

In prior seasons, ESPN had a max of 32 games to pick from the conference.  With the expansion for 2023 from 10 to 14 schools, it stands to reason that more games should be available for ABC/ESPN, but at the moment, the new number is unknown. I have reached out to the conference to get information as to whether the limits for ESPN have changed or not.

In addition, a minimum of 25 games on ABC, ESPN, FOX and FS1 was required in prior years.  It has already be achieved.

Notes

I know that ESPN had a few Saturday selections on the Pac-12 list marked as being in their inventory without knowledge of the time or TV being set.  I'm not listing those here because I have a feeling that FOX may have a game or two in mind ahead of ESPN those weeks and that the games being held by ESPN for those weeks could be the 3rd selection in a given week.

Both ABC/ESPN and FOX Sports have fixed number of selections.  ABC is required to carry one game in primetime out of a minimum of two games on the broadcast network, while FOX must carry eight games on their broadcast network with at least four of those eight in primetime on the east coast.  Both networks have hit those requirements.

The counts below do not include ABC carrying the conference's title game.

For Pac-12 Networks, each school must appear on the network for the same number of non-conference home games they have in a given season.  Through Week 11's selections, all Pac-12 schools have cleared their minimum required Pac-12 Networks appearances and do not need to appear on the network again.

SEC

In their final season carrying SEC football, CBS has a max of five appearances per school over the course of the season, excluding the conference title game.

CBS does have the ability to air a sixth game from a school using an exception built into the TV contract with the conference and used a sixth selection for Georgia on the Tennessee game on 11/18.  The exception has been used two other times: Florida in 2009 and Alabama in 2015.

CFB 2023 TV Week 3 Guesses - Revised

This is a revision to the original early season guesses for Week 3 .  Revisions are in red and include strikethroughs for my changes.  Will attempt articulate a few things.  There are less revisions to this particular week.

Here's where you can find the full schedules on my site for 2023.  If a game isn't listed in these guesses, assume its being streamed.

Thursday
7pm ACCN: Bethune-Cookman at Miami (FL)
7:30pm ESPN: Navy at Memphis

Friday
8pm ESPN: Army West Point at UTSA

Saturday
* Like the first two weeks, I've brought back the ACC RSN package.  If the package isn't going to happen, assume this game gets streamed via ACC Network Extra/ESPN+
* I flipped the San Jose State at Toledo and Vanderbilt at UNLV games on CBSSN.  UNLV gets to play at Allegiant Stadium, but they often need to clear their dates with the Raiders.  I can see them asking for the game to air early in the day.  I don't think the game would get moved to Friday as I suspect Vanderbilt would have to approve it.
* Similar to that, I think the Indiana vs. Louisville game being played at Lucas Oil Stadium might end up being an early game in the event the Colts play the following day.  I originally had it as a noon game.  I think Alabama at South Florida is fine in mid afternoon.

12pm ABC: Oklahoma at Tulsa
12pm FOX: Washington at Michigan State
12pm ESPN: Georgia Tech at Ole Miss
12pm ESPN2: Kansas State at Missouri
12pm FS1: Syracuse at Purdue

CFB 2023 TV Week 2 Guesses - Revised

This is a revision to the original early season guesses for Week 2 .  Revisions are in red and include strikethroughs for my changes.  Will attempt articulate a few things.

Here's where you can find the full schedules on my site for 2023.  If a game isn't listed in these guesses, assume its being streamed.

Thursday
7pm ACCN: Murray State at Louisville

Friday
8pm ESPN2: Houston at Rice

Saturday
* CBS came out with its NWSL schedule and has a telecast window at 12:30pm ET, so changed needed to happen to show one less Big Ten game on CBS.
* FS1 also has a 4pm ET MLB window, which triggered moving the Utah at Baylor game over to ESPN2 at 12pm ET.  From there, I figured the SMU at Oklahoma game could end up with ESPN+.  Oklahoma can have multiple ESPN+ games as they had their game vs. Baylor last year also on the streaming service in addition to their game vs. Kent State.
* Since I dropped Washington State at Colorado State from the Week 1 CBS 12pm window, the UCLA-San Diego State game seems like a reasonable make good.  It does bump CBS into a nighttime Big Ten game.  Is it a good Big Ten game? Not really.
* There's been some conjecture that the ACC RSN package may live on.  I've added the package back for now.  Assume that the game I've chosen ends up with ACC Network Extra/ESPN+ if the package is truly gone.

11am ACCN: App State at North Carolina

CFB 2023 TV Weeks 0 and 1 Guesses - Revised

This is a revision to the original early season guesses for Weeks 0 and 1.  I usually take one opportunity to make changes as schedules in other sports start to take space on the weekend, plus news sometimes trickles out.  Revisions are in red and include strikethroughs for my changes.  Will attempt articulate a few things.

Here's where you can find the full schedules on my site for 2023.  If a game isn't listed in these guesses, assume its being streamed.

Week 0

12pm NBC: Navy vs. Notre Dame
3:30pm ESPN: Mercer vs. North Alabama
3:30pm CBSSN: FIU at Louisiana Tech
7pm ESPN: South Carolina State vs. Jackson State
7:30pm SECN: Hawai'i at Vanderbilt
7pm CBSSN: UTEP at Jacksonville State
9pm Pac-12: San Jose State at USC
10:30pm CBSSN: Ohio at San Diego State

Week 1

Thursday
* Florida at Utah is now confirmed for the Thursday date.

7pm ACCN: Elon at Wake Forest
8pm FS1: Nebraska at Minnesota
9pm ESPN: Florida at Utah
10pm Pac-12: Southern Utah at Arizona State

Friday
* Due to some of the Saturday adjustments made, I moved the South Florida at WKU game to Friday night for CBSSN.  That is not confirmed at all.

7pm ACCN: Miami (OH) at Miami (FL)
7pm CBSSN: South Florida at WKU
7:30pm ESPN: Louisville vs. Georgia Tech
11:30pm CBSSN: Stanford at Hawai'i

Saturday
* After further consideration, I think CBS will take two Big Ten games this week instead of next weekend.  CBS has to use a spot I thought a Big Ten game could fill in Week 2 for other sports programming (you'll see in that post).
* Also, as I mentioned in the Week 3 guesses by the time they posted, it sounds like Notre Dame's Peacock exclusive will be the Central Michigan game and not the Tennessee State game, so I've updated that for NBC.
* I still haven't been able to track down whether the ACC RSN deal is ending or not.  For now, let's add the window back.  If the package is truly gone, assume the game I've listed ends up on ACC Network Extra/ESPN+ streaming.

2023 Early Season CFB TV Guesses: Week 3

Good morning.  2023 is live on my site, so feel free to poke around.

* I didn't specify every streaming game from ESPN+, ESPN3 or MW Network.  If the game isn't listed, assume its over there.  I did go ahead and specify a game airing on Peacock for this particular week.  With Notre Dame likely having at least one Peacock exclusive per season, plus eight Big Ten games on Peacock for the next several years, I felt it was important to spell those games out and will do so for future weeks.
* I realize that I guessed Tennessee State at Notre Dame for Week 1 for Peacock, but I've seen enough evidence to the contrary and that the Central Michigan game will end up on Peacock for Week 3.  I'll go back in a few weeks and probably re-think Weeks 0 & 1 and Week 2 to adjust things.
* This would be the first week that CBS gets a SEC game.
* Also, this is where I can see ESPN using a 6pm/9pm SEC doubleheader, as when you look at the available Pac-12 games, the quality of available games isn't there like it is for Week 2.
* I'd like to see one of the Pac-12 games that are destined for Pac-12 Networks move over to Friday night. Particularly if both Arizona schools end up on Pac-12 Networks.
* Compared to Week 2, the Big Ten provides a lot more quality for networks, even with a few clunkers in there.  BTN is a recipient of some of this good fortune.
* With both Oklahoma and Alabama playing at AAC schools, I figure these are two games that are likely to be geared toward ABC games, helping to fulfill a requirement to have games on ABC.
* I went with Washington at Michigan State over to FOX ahead of Penn State at Illinois to NBC.
