2023 Early Season CFB TV Guesses: Weeks 0 and 1

Good morning.  2023 is live on my site, so feel free to poke around.

I'll start with sketching out what I think the 2023 early season (Weeks 0-3) schedule will look like.  Starting with Week 4 (the Saturday date of 9/23/2023), most games will have their time and TV outlets set 12 days in advance of the game date, so take that date of the game that won't be picked here, look at the Monday date of the prior week, and that's the date you should look for time and TV to be set.

Yes, there are six day holds that TV can use that will potentially affect that game's start time or TV outlet.  There are also a few games that do get TV set farther in advance than most, such as Notre Dame home games and the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry game.

For Weeks 0 and 1, there are some typical conflicts with other sports that affect the available TV windows.  I'm expecting these events to take up time and note them below.

Week 0

12pm NBC: Navy vs. Notre Dame
3:30pm ESPN: Mercer vs. North Alabama
3:30pm CBSSN: FIU at Louisiana Tech
7pm ESPN: South Carolina State vs. Jackson State
7:30pm SECN: Hawai'i at Vanderbilt
7pm CBSSN: UTEP at Jacksonville State
9pm Pac-12: San Jose State at USC
10:30pm CBSSN: Ohio at San Diego State

Week 1

Thursday
* I'm going to assume that the option for Florida at Utah to move to Thursday is taken up by the two schools.
* As in previous years, I do not expect ESPN2 to be available all day Saturday due to US Open tennis.
* FOX will have a primetime MLB window this week starting at 7pm.  I do not know if
* During the Wake Forest-Syracuse men's basketball game on 3/4/23, it appears that the ACC RSN package was announced as ending going forward, which would put that content back with ESPN's platforms going forward.
* Supposedly the Big Ten will have a primetime game on NBC on Sunday in addition to Saturday for Week 1.  As you can see, the schedule is a bit blah.  I moved Northwestern at Rutgers over, but I have no clue what game will move.  There's no guarantee for it to be a high profile game at this point.
* I didn't specify every streaming game from ESPN+, ESPN3 or MW Network.  If the game isn't listed, assume its over there.  I did go ahead and specify a game airing on Peacock for this particular week.  With Notre Dame likely having at least one Peacock exclusive per season, plus eight Big Ten games on Peacock for the next several years, I felt it was important to spell those games out and will do so for future weeks.
* With the Oregon State-San Jose State game moved to Sunday, I put it on FOX.  I don't think the game will be on FS1 as it has NHRA and MLS from about 4pm ET - 9:30pm, unless they want that late window, and if they did, I think they could do it Saturday.  As for CBS, I don't think the game was moved to Sunday just for CBSSN and CBS last year carried the Big3 basketball championship on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend last year.
* I think CBS will try to burn off one of its MW broadcast network games in an early window.  For this I chose Washington State at Colorado State.

7pm ACCN: Elon at Wake Forest
8pm FS1: Nebraska at Minnesota
9pm ESPN: Florida at Utah
10pm Pac-12: Southern Utah at Arizona State

Friday
7pm ACCN: Miami (OH) at Miami (FL)
7:30pm ESPN: Louisville vs. Georgia Tech
11:30pm CBSSN: Stanford at Hawai'i

Saturday
12pm FOX: East Carolina at Michigan
12pm CBS: Washington State at Colorado State
12pm ESPN: California at North Texas
12pm FS1: UTSA at Houston
12pm BTN: Towson at Maryland
12pm BTN: Fresno State at Purdue
12pm ESPNU: Louisiana Tech at SMU
12pm SECN: Ball State at Kentucky
12pm ACCN: Wofford at Pitt
12pm CBSSN: NC State at UConn
2:30pm Peacock: Tennessee State at Notre Dame
3:30pm ABC: South Carolina vs. North Carolina
3:30pm FOX: Nevada at USC
3:30pm CBS: West Virginia at Penn State
3:30pm FS1: Sam Houston at BYU

Curious..
Why would West VA at Penn State be on CBS

CBS has rights to Big Ten games starting next season. 7 games in 2023 due to their final SEC season.

In terms of BYU home games, do you expect any 10am kickoffs? Will they push any games later than 8pm?

I suspect they'll do 10am kicks for broadcast TV, which I think would only be ABC. Otherwise, I bet 10:15pm ET is their limit.

I have been a fan long enough for BYU so I feel like the earliest home game that they are willing to go is 3:30 EST. Can’t see them doing 10 local time which would be just weird

They used to do 10am starts to get games on SportsWest years back instead of going with no TV locally. This was in the MW when a 3pm ESPN Regional game of the week was an exclusive window.

With them in the Big 12 now, they have a little less say vs their own contract. Colorado had a few 10am starts in the Big 12 too for FSN. I think it's less likely though.

Could you see the ECU at Michigan game being moved to Sunday?

Pretty rough week 1 schedule. Very few big names playing each other! Sadly week 2 might even be worse. Appreciate your work Matt!

Decided they didn't need a hand if one was not worth airing there.

Ok. I'm not understanding your reference. FOX isn't scheduled to air MLB that day. Not sure about FS1 at the moment.

"Is there an opening for Fox to air a college football game on Thursday August 31st?"

Don't know. They don't publish listings that far in advance.
