2022 Conference TV Requirements, Six Day Holds and Likely First Picks

Updated as of 11/22/22 with 6 day TV decisions for 11/25 & 11/26.  

Instead of cluttering up the weekly picks, I'm going to keep track of selection specific information in this post like six day holds that have been used, the number of times I think a network has chosen first and the required appearances that a school needs to fill on conference networks like Big Ten Network or Pac-12 Network

Six Day Holds Used

ACC: 3 of 4 (10/1, 10/29, 11/19)

American: 2 of 4 (10/29, 11/19)

Big 12: 4 of 4 (10/1, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19)

Big Ten: 3 of 4 (11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26)

Please note that this is my guess about who chose first in a given Saturday.  This is not a confirmation from either the networks or conferences of who chose first.

Both ESPN (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU) and FOX Sports (FOX & FS1) would normally carry 27 Big Ten games per season.  Because of an arrangement between ESPN and FOX Sports related to ESPN signing Joe Buck as a NFL broadcaster, FOX Sports has received one of ESPN's telecasts, meaning that FOX has one more than a normal season and ESPN has one less.  

For some reason, FOX Sports was able to pull in 29 selections.  Not sure how that happened.  Trying to investigate that occurrence.

Here's the count of selections for each network, including games selected into the future.  This count excludes the conference championship game.

All Big Ten schools must appear twice on BTN with at least one of those appearances against another Big Ten school.  All have met that requirement as of 11/19's selections.

Both ESPN and FOX Sports have 22 Pac-12 game selections for the season.  ESPN can count a neutral site game with a Pac-12 school as part of their Pac-12 selections, meaning that Oregon vs. Georgia is included in ESPN's game count.

There are requirements that at least two of ESPN's games air on ABC and one of those ABC games must in East Coast primetime.  FOX must carry eight games on their broadcast network with four of those games in primetime, which does include games that start at 10:30pm ET.

ESPN has already met its primetime commitment for ABC.  FOX has met their broadcast network game count and primetime game commitment.

Pac-12 Networks requirement is dependent on each team's schedule.  Each school can appear no more than nine times amongst the ESPN and FOX packages, with the remainder on Pac-12 Networks.  The math for that usually works out to the number of non-conference home games each school has scheduled.  

Oregon is in a unique place because it has two non-conference home games, but the their 3rd non-conference game vs. Georgia gets claimed by national rights holder ESPN.  Its part of a quirk in their rights agreement. So I'm not 100% sure on the number of required appearances Oregon will need.  

Confirmed from the Pac-12 that Oregon only needed two appearances on Pac-12 Networks.

The Big 12 has a couple requirements:

• Each school gets one game on ESPN+ (all except Texas) or Longhorn Network (Texas only) as a institutionally controlled game.  It doesn't count towards the primary ESPN count of games.
• FOX doesn't have a count of games required, but ESPN has a maximum of 32 games across their 1st tier games, excluding the conference championship game. This would be for all games on ESPN linear networks or ESPN+ that aren't part of the institutionally controlled games.
• 25 games must air across ABC, FOX, ESPN and FS1, excluding the conference championship game.

The counts below include games selected for future weeks this season and any weeknight games.

Excluding the conference championship game, SEC schools cannot appear more than five times on CBS.  There are rare exceptions where a sixth appearance is allowed.

Last but not least, the American is guaranteed to have 40 games total between ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.  Three games must air on ABC and a minimum of 20 must air between ABC, ESPN and ESPN2.  Both counts exclude the conference championship game.
